Dear mattytun,
Hi there! The paid version of the "Swiss Army knife" appears in the system tray if it is enabled as i will show you in a thumbnail. The presence of MBAM icon in the system tray is an indication of"Real-time protection".

Now to know, whether MBAM is in the startup items, i will show you the startup items in Winpatrol as a thumbnail. Please be ready for a few shocks!
There are many ways to find out "the startup items"!

I don't know if the free version can automatically startup, however.

Full scans can also be performed with the free version, and I think I would say with an anti-virus and firewall, the free version would be good enough.
