FreeHideFolder (fhide.exe) malware/riskware or not?
Hi;

I would just like some help and clarification to verify if FreeHideFolder (fhide.exe) is really a malware or not. It is not detected as such but independent
scans by VirusTotal/Jotti and Filterbit says, otherwise. Here are the results from them:

Scan for fhide.exe

A-Squared: Riskware.Application.FreeHideFolder!IK
Avira: APPL/HideFolder
CP Secure: Malware.Generic
Ikarus: not-avirus.Application.FreeHideFolder
VBA32: Backdoor.XiaoBird.70(paranoid heuristics)
CAT-QuickHeal 10.00 2009.07.07 : Trojan.Agent.IRC
McAfee-GWEdition 6.8.5 2009.07.07 : Heuristic.LooksLike.Game.Casino.C
Sophos 4.43.0 2009.07.07 Free Hide Folder

I am using it but since the results I have quarantined it and placed it in my blocked files.

I have already sent a copy of the file via the Malwarebytes for testing.

Can you enlighten me on this and about this file. A friend informed me that the "Heur" detection result means that it is only the heuristics that detects the file as an infection/malware and not a "definition". So as a general meaning it "may" or "may not" be an infection.

Are any one of you guys using this software?

Is there a software(freeware) that you can recommend as an alternative for hiding folders which you know is safe to use?

Help please.

Thank you very much.

Regards,

voltronDefender

If you're after security then TrueCrypt comes highly recommended; hiding folders is not much good for anything.

Hi;

I have an encryption software via Ashampoo Magical Security it encrypts the file or folder but you can still see it in Windows explorer, only when you encrypt it you cant open it unless you know the password. I don't know about TrueCrypt. Haven't tried it yet but if TrueCrypt can hide and encrypt my data then yeah I think I will try it also.

Yes, TrueCrypt supports all sorts of data encryption and hiding techniques even to the point of giving you total deniability; there is no way to identify that a volume has been encrypted with TrueCrypt if you don't have the key, and it requires no installation and leaves no trace of its use on your system.

And it's free
