My computer will not update anything?
First off, let me start out by saying that I'm not very tech savvy at all, so some patience and assistance will be needed in order for me to give more information / preform fixes.

This problem has persisted for quite a while and I've ignored it by using other computers for over 4 months. My computer was infected with a virus a while ago and I took it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy because I could not access the internet or update anything.

The internet connection problem was fixed, but I'm still not able to upate anything except Windows itself.

I try to download antivirus software, but am unable to use them because they cannot update the virus database.

I cannot access World of Warcraft or Final Fantasy XI because both of them have released updates that I'm unable to download and install.

I've tried following the advice Blizzard and Square Enix gave me, such as allowing certain ports on my firewall, but the problem will not go away. Even with no firewall or antivirus software active, I can't update anything.

My operating system is Windows XP and to the best of my knowledge I have an up to date version of it.

Any advice you might have would be very much appreciated,

Zach

(I apologize if this question was addressed elsewhere, but for some reason I'm unable to use the search function of the website, it says something about an internal server error or the website undergoing maitenence)

Dear zriley56,
Welcome! After your internet connection was restored, did you run a on-line virus scanner,to be sure that the virus was completely removed? I recommend the BitDefender on-line scanner-- http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html

An alternate method was suggested in the cnet.forums and i am giving the link : http://forums.cnet.com/5208-6122_102...hreadID=316378

Best wishes!

PS: what was the name of the Virus and what version of IE are you using?

if you cant get to perfumes links try these

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

if they find anything then request to have your thread moved to the malware removal thread.

PS trendmicro will find tracking cookies...no need to call that a positive

IMO you are going to be infected.

Dear brett,
Today, i ran a Panda online virus scan! Three days back, i ran a BitBefender scan and both showed "no infection". Earlier than these two, i ran the Trend-micro scan and it showed Kaspersky database itself as infected with Trojans! Sent a lot of .dlls from the KIS to virustotal and the verdict was 0/41! The lesson i drew: Do not depend on one specific virus scan to determine whether an infection is there in the PC!

THanks for the replies guys!

I'm running that Bitdefender online scanner right now, hasn't found anything as of yet but it still has a while to go.

I'm not sure what the virus was, I'll see if I can dig up the thing from geek squad.

I'll keep the thread updated with any results I have.

what happens is the file names or definitions are picked up and put in the list of suspects.
often these infections are modified or rewritten and would not be picked up until new definition files are made..therefore a filename itself can get a hit,

Now always a bad thing..about 3 years ago I had a zipped file that i hadnt opened yet...it had a backdoor in it waiting for me upon unzipping.
It was a music player i read about..i went ahead and downloaded it..but forgot about it
