FX 3.5 is driving me & my FW nuts.
I think I was running FX 3.0.11 on xp when I saw that 3.5 was out and was supposedly faster. I upgraded FX 3.0 to 3.5 and it wouldn't work, so I uninstalled FX 3 with Revo, cleaned Mozilla and FX out of all the Docs/settings files, program files, & then cleaned the registry. Then I reinstalled FX 3.5 and have since upgraded it to 3.5.1. I can't say that I see any speed increase with FX 3.5 over 3.0, but that (imo) is an issue with the (turtle-slow) Comcast DNS servers.
However, the 3.5 series just acts "funky" compared to the 3.0 series. FX 3.5 takes ages to close down and sometimes appears in the task mgr up to a minute (or more) after closing FX down. There's also a lot more port 53 ( I guess DNS) connects while using 3.5 as compared to FX 3.0.....series. I've monitored these with Wireshark and they look "ordinary", but there's still more DNS connects (showing up in my FW log), as over the years you get a feel for what web-sites are JS-tracking-heavy with subsequent DNS connects trying to fly out everywhere.(Using NS with FX). There's also a lot more of these with 3.5 "Server not found". Just got several of these when trying to connect to this website, something called Tech-Support-Guy.org was trying to load, and my FW showed no blocks in the log.
Also my HIPS is asking me for a ton more Yes/No for a FX pulling up a DLL called mscms.dll. (I guess some websites can call up this DLL for FX to load, as not all of them do it). If I don't approve mscms.dll, FX won't connect out, and I have to shut it down and restart it. I don't know WTH mscms.dll does as when I let it load, I can't tell one bit of difference in any websites picture or color quality. I've Googled all I can about mscms.dll and it looks like a legit M$ DLL & you shoudn't disable or delete it, but it looks like a security risk to me, as I can't tell that it does anything when I let it load w/o setting the FW to block-all. .
I'd go back to FX 3.0, and I'd like to upgrade 3.0.....11 to 3.0....12 but when you pull up the "old FX Downloads" over at Mozilla.com and then select US-English 3.0...12, you don't get 3.0....12 but you get 3.5 ^%$$#^%&(*()_(&^%. (Maybe on Wednesday when Mozilla is supposedly releasing 3.5.2), all these 3.5 quirks will be fixed.
1) Can anyone explain what this mscms.dll actually does? and can individual websites somehow trigger FX to call up this dll? Can mscms.dll be a security risk? If so, how can you check if it's legit? 2) Does anyone know where I can get FX 3.0....12, as I can revert back to my OS image with 3.0.11 but I'd rather just do a clean reinstall of 3.0....12 as I've got several profiles backed up and my about:config saved to txt incase the profles BU doesn't work.
thx.

Dear jrx10,
Why did you do this quote"cleaned the registry" Unquote? The very need for an upgrade for FF were the Java Script attacks and an essential Add-on, the "NoScript" was/is recommended to avert such attacks and thus Mozilla came out with this major upgrade to 3.5.1. Once you install FF,under "Tools">Add-Ons>Get the recommended Add-ons and if NoScript is not there, just use the Google engine to install the "latest version of NOScript". Sometimes the Heuristics can be a nuisance and you may temporarily disable it or downgrade the settings, depending on which FW or Sec.Suite you are using!

I found this explanation of mscms.dll at processlibrary:
