What security package is best for home computers?
We've been running Norton as our security software for quite a while, our subscription is up in a few days, should we renew or is there a package out there better suited to our needs?

One desktop, one laptop and 4 kids who are under strict orders not to download anything without asking!!

Cheers

Hi there!! I am not a specialist in computers nor in security, but my sister has kids and she has something called parental control that she uses to limit her kids' access on the computer.
I think it is Bitdefender that she has on the computer If you wish you can try it, I can ask her more details.

Good luck!

I feel keep what you have ,since the kids know it. Plus with all the new threats everyday sofar you have been free of all of them. Changing to me would be dumb, plus you can rest assured there still safe. I use it also and the price is no problem to me, I feel safe and secure. Douglas

Dear Cazzabell,
Welcome to the site! I have to agree with SIR****TMG. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

Adding extra layers of safety is an altogether different matter, because the internet is becoming unsafe for the unwary!

Two software programs, most of the members have and strongly recommend are 1) Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free OR paid). Website for download: http://malwarebytes.org/
and, 2) Super Anti-Spyware (free or paid). Website for download : http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html

You mentioned that you have four kids at home with strict orders before downloading! That's where you need a tool which can fore-tell whether the site which they/or you are about to visit is "clean" or not! Enter, stage left, Dr. Web Link Scanner! Website for download : http://www.freedrweb.com/browser/

Best wishes!

You said you had been using Norton for "awhile." If you have only been updating and renewing the protection definitions, it might be time to consider doing a full upgrade to the latest version. They update the base engine every couple of years, and that isn't usually included in the annual definition renewal.

Hey arjana,
what has this all to do with Bariatric surgery and clip on hair extensions? Highly suspicious indeed!

I'd strongly advise BitDefender Total Security 2010.

Dear cazzabell,
In my previous post, i mentioned not to change Norton, but like all things ,"change is constant"! Panda ( a reputed name in security for two decades) has introduced a revolutionary concept which it claims is superior to "pro-active defense" called the Cloud technology( It is still in the beta stage, hence comes with glitches). It works on both XP and Vista 32 bit platforms and more importantly is free. It is called the "Panda Cloud Anti virus 2009" and available for download from : http://www.cloudantivirus.com/

Since you have to protect a desktop and a laptop, this freeware may come in useful. A useful review before installing, comes from softpedia.com : http://www.softpedia.com/reviews/win...w-110609.shtml

Mark Muller from Brighthub.com says " Panda Cloud Antivirus has been called a silver-bullet to computer threats, yet the software does not make a good impression." But read the article : http://www.brighthub.com/computing/s...ews/33738.aspx

Best wishes. Hope i have given you enough info' to make " an unbiased and informed judgement" and that's what matters in the end!

Some protection methods are free, all you have to do is spend time configuring them. See here :
