AVG Scan Shuts Computer Down... Help?
Hi there. I've an odd situation where running my AVG Free computer scan causes my computer to shut off about an hour into it. It scanned in Safe Mode fine, found nothing. Housecall online scan found nothing. Same with Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware scans, found nothing.

I uninstalled AVG free and reinstalled it but that did not help.

Any suggestions please?

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Hi, thnx. Pasted first one with word wrap on and second one with it off - not sure which is easier for you to read. Also - last night tried a System Restore because after installing an app. called Quick Gamma to calibrate my monitor, Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel wouldn't load, and the system could not restore...

Try uninstalling AVG with the AVG Remover, then reinstalling it. See if you still get the problem.

As for your HijackThis log, I remember having to look at it a while back and can still see the same errors.

I would start a new thread in the Malware Removal forum and ask an expert to have a few entries fixed in your log. You can also click on the Report button and ask to be moved there.

Started a new thread re: HJT and will try AVG Remover/reinstall. If I still have problems with AVG do you think I should post back to this thread or the other?

Once your computer is cleaned up and we're sure you do not have any malware, you can post back here for future AVG problems.

Hi There,

They haven't been able to get to my HJT log yet and I am still unable to run a virus scan, which makes me uncomfortable with system restore not functioning and simply going this long without one.

Used the remove tool and reinstalled, said, on reinstalling, that I already had an anti-virus program running (?). Found AVG was still in my All Programs Menu and removed. Still shut down on scan. Uninstalled again (remover), installed Avira, it would not update and could not find an update file for manual update on their site anywhere. Uninstalled that. Put AVG back on, still with 'other program' warning. It seems to work in real-time but not sure and cannot scan with it (unless in safe mode). Web pages loading slowly or hanging now also.

Can we do anything about the anti-virus problem before the HJT log is cleaned? And.. is it just a matter of them being swamped or should I bump my HJT thread again? Thanks for your help!!
