IBM X-Force Security Report Calls Web Insecure
IBM X-Force Security Report Calls Web Insecure.

Web insecurity. That's the two-word summary of IBM's X-Force 2009 Mid-Year Trend and Risk Report. Big Blue released its latest survey Wednesday with some troubling news: Web client, server and content threats are converging to create an untenable risk landscape.

It's interesting that Windows wasn't mentioned even once in the Yahoo link. Hmmm, no one ever wants to mention the "Windows" word when it comes to insecurity and malware, and Yahoo probably isn't allowed to these days.

The report available on the IBM site doesn't mention Windows either, but it DOES say this: "The first article assesses one of the more serious threats of 2009, Conficker. The Conficker worm family has evolved into a massive sophisticated malicious botnet arsenal and infrastructure of millions of compromised hosts."

I know, I'll likely get flamed into oblivion for saying this, but the hard truth is that Microsoft products are the weakest link, and the one thing ALL those problems have in common. Spambots and Conficker infections are Windows-only problems.

If that fact never gets mentioned, if people (and bloggers and journalists) don't speak up about it, then Microsoft will never bother to improve their software (beyond making it prettier to look at).

I know, a lot of people like to believe that other systems would be just as insecure if they were as "popular" as Windows. I know that's untrue, but even if it WERE true, it's still a good reason for more diversity. It's not like there are no other choices.

Okay, guess I'd better toddle off and put on my flame-proof overcoat...
