Hi, I am new to this site, and in need of assistance. When trying to help fix/optimize my grandmother's laptop (HP Pavilion dv6208nr), I apparently messed it up.
Initially i was having trouble with internet connection as the computer was getting the 169.xx.xxxx IP Address error, and I stumbled across a thread on this site that , tried ipconfig commands, netsh winsock commands, etc, but got nowhere. Gave instructions to manually configur IP settings in command promt to mirror a working computer on the network, which I was successful in doing. Still need to address the IP issues, as my g-ma travels, so disabling DHCP and manually configuring IP settings is a band-aid I was using in order to gain internet access necessary to install MCAfee and Spybot, which I planned to use to clean out any residual issues stemming from her 1 1/2 ish years of using her laptop with no security.
I should also mention that I purchased and installed WIN CLEANER (bad move, I know), and ran it, which "cleaned the registry". Ya, right. Since this, I did "undo" the registry cleaning, but I feel damage was done.
So next I attempted to run MCAfee, and during a scan, BSOD with fuzzy screen.
I got nervous, so I attached my WD 300G hard drive to backup the files on the computer, and again, BSOD, fuzzy screen.
Tried again to run both of the above, and also downloaded/ran Spybot Search and Destroy, all with the same results.
I was able to boot in safe mode, re-install MCAffee from CD and ran a successful scan to completion, that found nothing.

I am completely lost at this point, and need help--initially with finding root problem fro BSOD, then with working out the IP issues that started all of this.

NOTE: I updated a driver for the NVIDIA networking adapter, but I rolled it back already. I have also done a system restore to a point in time prior to my installation of the security programs listed above, but this did not prevent BSOD from returning

I'm afraid your minidump files are not a big help for us. The probable cause is too generic.

Well, running without security software for 1½ years can definitely cause this kind of issue...

With all due respect, McAfee isn't the top gun in malware detection...

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

There's no way to know what damage the registry cleaner might have done. Perhaps a sfc /scannow will help you get back a few missing DLLs.

I can see traces of Norton in your log. Norton is notorious for various conflicting issues when not properly uninstalled. Use the Norton Removal Tool to remove all traces.

Other than that, I can't see anything in your log to explain your BSODs.

You could also run a chkdsk /r to see what it comes up with.

Thank you very much for your help. I believe the Norton complete uninstall did the trick, but I ran the chkdsk /r and sfc /scannow just for good measure.

NOTE: Not sure which step did it, but the 169.XXX.X.X problem is gone as well. The computer can now acquire an IP address via DHCP.
