Also noted, the last few times I have restarted the computer a non-repsonsive window is displayed for CcSvcHst.

Symantec Norton keeps rearing its ugly head in that computer.

My advice to you is to go here and download the Norton Removal Tool and then run the tool to get rid of it.

You can then go here and select one of the top 3 in the list to replace it. They're all free and all do a good job. I personally use AVG, but Avast gets better reviews.

If you do get rid of Symantec Norton and replace it with another antivirus program, restart that computer afterwards and then post a new HijackThis log here.

I see back-to-back HijackThis logs.

Did you run the Norton removal tool, restart your computer, and then install AVG8?

Some log entries need to be dealt with, but I need to know what you did first.

I ran the Norton removal tool. I turned on the Windows firewall and then restarted the computer.

Ran the first log.

Downloaded AVG.
Re-started the computer and ran the second log.

What logs are you referring to?

You need to be specific in your comments so I don't have to guess or assume or ask more questions. That delays helping you.

I'm sorry that I didn't explain it that well. I am on a blackberry so I was using shorthand. I did not run 2 identical HijackThis scans. I ran one HijackThis scan after I used the Norton removal tool and restarted the computer. I then downloaded AVG via the link you gave me. I ran another Hijackthis scans after I installed AVG and restarted the computer. I thought it would be helpful for you to see both.

I'm sorry for the confusion.I can't always do things very quickly because I only go work on the computer when I have some free time. I am not in a hurry so I appoligize if this is taking up too much of your time.

The internet is running again and the only issue that has continued to appear is the paging file. I know the computer really needs some updating, and I didn't want to mess with the paging issue unless directed to do so.

As I previously advised in post #10, that desktop supports up to 2048 MB of RAM. You really need to increase it to at least 1024 MB. Leave the page file(virtual memory) set to "system managed size". Don't set a minimum and maximum size to it.

I'm aware that the second HijackThis log was posted after you installed AVG8 because I can see the AVG-related entries in it. Your wording confused me and had me assuming that you were referring to some other log. Anyway, we're straight now.

Now that you've used the Norton removal tool to get rid of Symantec Norton, let's make sure that it's cleaned out of your computer.

Go into the C:\Program Files folder and look for folders with the name

LiveUpdate

Norton

Symantec

If any of those folders are there, right-click on them and then click Delete - Yes.

If any folders were found and deleted, restart your computer and then post a new HijackThis log here.

If none were found to be deleted, there's no need to restart and post a new HijackThis log.

I think the computer is running great. I've never been a fan of Norton because it seems to take up so many resources. So I think removing Norton has to make things better.

There are 3 "Dell support center" startup entries and 1 service entry in the HijackThis log that don't need to load during startup and run in the background - if you're agreeable with disabling them from doing so. I'll give you instructions.

Thank you so much.

I downloaded Windows Defender and turned off a few things at start-up that aren't used. Do you suggest turning off Windows Defender the rest of the time, or should I get rid of it?

The only other issue is at start-up. When I click on a profile, the CPU beeps once and it appears to freeze in the 'Loading personal seettings" screen. If I hit CTRL-ALT-DEL it will boot up Windows. If not it takes forever (I haven't had the patience today to wait longer then 5 minutes.)

You downloaded and installed Windows Defender in that computer?

Get rid of it. It does a lousy job of malware protection. I don't even keep it running in my Windows Vista computer. If I could uninstall it, I would.

And don't use it for editing the startup and service lists.
