Virus and Trojan problem! Windows XP
Hi All,

I'm not very technical and my understanding of computers is very limited!!

I use a Toshiba lap-top windows XP and connect to Tiscali Broadband. I have installed AVG-free security about 3,years ago!

The problem:

While trying to post a thread on a forum that I use regularly, A notice flashed up on the computer screen exclaiming that my computer was under threat from a virus etc, this programme firmly installed itself on my computer, there was an Icon installed on the start-up; it was an orange shield, the programme was called "PAVAC" there was nothing I could do to uninstall it; and when I tried to use the ADD & Remove facility the programme didn't show up on the list of files! I could not use my computer while this programme / Virus was installed! Eventually, by using system restore to an earlier date, I am able to use the computer again!!

The message from this programme/Virus was : W32Pavsee is a virus it infects EXE and .Com files Trojan win32 . agent . AZSY.
Once launched the Trojan copies it's body to the current users Windows Start-Up Directory and attempts to steal passwords from INT

I'm worried this might happen again! What should I do? Can you adv help and advise "Please" The programme also directed me to purchase "Personal ID security!

As you said, you've done a System Restore...and that's a good thing
Now to help you get protected, AVG FREE 3 YEARS AGO!!! what the?!!
Uninstall that OLD AVG Free and choose another more effective Antivirus, like Avast Home Edititon, go here http://avast.com/. Or if you still prefer AVG, get the latest Free Edition, it's version 8. After downloading, install it...then do a Full System Scan. Now you're safe! but be careful when downloading anything. Ok?

Thanks John,

I have recently up-dated to AVG 8, but it's the free version and doesn't include ID protection! Do you think Avast would provide better protection? also when AVG starts scanning the whole computer system is really slow; and it takes about 2,hours to complete the scan!

Also I'm a bit weary of down-loading anything, I'm a little afraid of making a major mistake, as my knowledge and understanding of computers is extremely limited!

Cheers John, your help was really appreciated!!

Do the following in the order listed:

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

Go here and click the green icon to download Malwarebyte Anti-Malware 1.40.

Go here and click the green icon to download AVG 8.5.409.

After you've downloaded and saved all the above files, install AVG 8.5.409. I don't know how old your current AVG version is, so you may be prompted to allow the old version to be uninstalled before the new version is installed. Allow it to be uninstalled so the new version can install. After the new version is installed, allow it to check for definition updates. After the install is complete, restart your computer.

Install HijackThis 2.0.2. After it installs, run a scan with it. The scan will take 30 seconds or less. When the scan is finished, save the resulting log in Notepad. Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Don't install and do anything with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.40 yet.

Hi Flav,

I'll certainly have a look on those links -THANKS!

I have the most recent edition of AVG Free 8.5 I have also had Spy-bot recommended! Not really sure which way to go yet! Also Microsoft malware in windows up-date! There's so many to choose from; I'm not really sure which one to choose for best protection, that's easy to install and easy to use.

I'm glad to see that you have the current 8.5 version of AVG.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.40 and SUPERAntiSpyware 4.28.0.1010 are frequently mentioned and recommended on these forums because they're user-friendly and do a very good job. I use them both.

We do need to see a HijackThis log of your computer, so please follow the previous instructions for it.

I prefer Avast than AVG, and you might also find it better. So why not try it? http://avast.com/

Now about the Full System Scan. Scan your computer tonight, before you sleep. Sure it will take hours. But after all, you'll be safe.

Oh btw, you don't need SUPERAntiSpyware because Avast (as well as AVG) already have Spyware protection. And it's not recommended to use 2 antivirus/anti-spyware at a time.
