Is This a 'Real' warning from Microsoft !!!
WIN XP, SP2/ I.E. 6x outlook exp. 6 Norton Internet Security System, 2009

Hello - this a.m. booted up my computer (turn it off during the nite when i finish) did a manual update then quick scan - all o.k. ...while at a web page suddenly saw a 'microsoft' popup stating i have many trojan infections with lots of 'red' shields showing ...i was so startled that i didn't take the time to read anything or see if there were 'instructions - i just immediately did a shutdown/-( i did not click on anything within that popup..not even to 'close it out'')

rebooted did a full scan - nothing showing as problems so i restarted computer and here i am ... are there 'fake' popups appearing to be from microsoft but not actually from the company? and if there was an infection/trojans, etc. wouldn't the identifying company be Norton instead of Microsoft ?

this is the first time i've ever experienced anything like this .... thanks in advance - Edythe

If you search in google for Microsoft warnings popup, lots of stuff comes up.
Check if anything sounds similar.
If you have Norton, I assume is something faking the warnings but I am not an expert. I always check out if a warning is real by googling it. Many are fake.
I only trust warnings of my Security program (Kaspersky) and you seem to have Norton.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

EDYTHE:

Follow the instructions in post #4.

We need to see a HijackThis log.

Make sure to close all open windows before running a scan with it.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Also, go here and click the green icon to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41.

Close all open windows, then install it.

Just download and install it and don't do anything with it yet until we see a HijackThis log.
