Unhappy svchost.exe error
I'm working on a Windows Professional 2002, service pack 2 on a Pentium 4, 1.8 GHz, 512mb ram.

After start-up and after I've connected to the internet, this error message pops up: "0x001f1cbo" referenced memory at "0x001f1cbo" the memory could not be "written". Then I have the option to click ok or cancel. If I don't touch the error message, i can use my computer fine, if I click ok, my internet stops working, and im not sure what happens if i click cancel.

From what I've read across the web, it's some sort of malware or virus. Problem is, i don't have reliable virus protection and as simple as it sounds to download it, i'm in a country where 90% of it's software is illegal copies (whether bought or cracked/downloaded/copied/shared).

This question doesn't concern illegal activity and i know that simply buying a good copy of virus protection would probably solve this issue (like i have on my personal computer, but I'm working on a friend's), but they don't have the money to buy licensed copies. It's actually a problem i'd venture to say that affects a lot of the third world countries.

Long story short, I have this error message, how can i make it go away?

You can get free antivirus programs on the Web easily. No need to get illegal copies of anything. Try Avira Antivir, Avast or AVG.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Thanks for the help! I'm downloading Avast currently and ran the HijackThis. Find the report below. Should I run the antivirus first or wait for your advice? Either way, i suppose I'll wait :-)

Your computer is heavily infected (worms and password stealers). That's what you get when downloading illegal cracked software (e.g. from Cybermania).

You should click on the Report button and kindly ask to be moved to the Malware Removal forum.

This helped for me.

How to Repair this SVCHOST.EXE error :
After some investigating into the "0x001f1cb0" SVCHOST error, it became apparent the problem is a corrupted Windows Update in Windows XP. Follow the steps below to fix this error.

Verify Windows Update Service Settings

1.)Click on Start, Run and type the following command in the open box and click OK

services.msc

2.)Find the Automatic Updates service and double-click on it.

3.)Click on the Log On Tab and make sure the "Local System Account" is selected as the logon account and the box for "allow service to interact with desktop" is UNCHECKED.

4.)Under the Hardware Profile section in the Log On Tab, make sure the service is enabled.

5.)On the General Tab, the Startup Type should be Automatic, if not, drop the box down and select Automatic.

6.)Under "Service Status" on the General tab, the service should be Started, click the Start button enable it.

7.)Repeat the steps above for the service "Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)"

Re-Register Windows Update DLLs

8.)Click on Start, Run, and type CMD and click ok

9.)In the black command window type the following command and press Enter

REGSVR32 WUAPI.DLL

10.)Wait until you receive the "DllRegisterServer in WUAPI.DLL succeeded" message and click OK

11.)Repeat the last two steps above for each of the following commands:

REGSVR32 WUAUENG.DLL
REGSVR32 WUAUENG1.DLL
REGSVR32 ATL.DLL
REGSVR32 WUCLTUI.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS.DLL
REGSVR32 WUPS2.DLL
REGSVR32 WUWEB.DLL

Remove Corrupted Windows Update Files
*At the command prompt, type the following command and press Enter

net stop WuAuServ
* Still at the command prompt,

type cd %windir% and press Enter
* In the opened folder, type the following command and press Enter to rename the SoftwareDistribution Folder

ren SoftwareDistribution SD_OLD
* Restart the Windows Update Service by typing the following at the command prompt

net start WuAuServ

* type Exit and Press Enter to close the command prompt

Reboot Windows

* click on Start, Shut Down, and Restart to reboot Windows XP

Although this method may not solve all of the issues with a SVCHOST.EXE Application error, I have found it fixed the problem with the 0x001f1cb0 application error.
