Hi,

Hope you didn't install the new antivirus without a good UNinstall of McAfee....

You can try this McAfee tool that helps remove the bits from their security apps:

Click Save and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where the file was saved.
Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.

NOTE: Windows Vista users must right-click MCPR.exe and select Run as Administrator.

Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.
Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.
If the message Cleanup Unsuccessful is displayed, follow the steps below to view and save your MCPR log files for analysis by Technical Support.
Let us know how it goes..... I also would UNinstall Windows Defender.

The Windows Security Center may not be "recognizing" Avast antivirus...have seen that before.... you can Change how the Security Center alerts you, and tell it that you have an antivirus program that you will control yourself.... more for that later.

Things may turn out better after you run the McAfee tool.....hope so.

betyo:

I'm glad to hear that you're using Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware.

Run their update function about once a week, then do a "quick scan" with them, then allow them to select and fix EVERYTHING they find. Doing that will keep malware, spyware, adware tracking cookies, browser hijackers, etc. in check.

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you still have McAfee VirusScan installed and running in the background, I'm halfway surprised that Alwil Avast was able to install.

You need to follow Byteman's instructions and run the McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool to get rid of McAfee. Make sure to restart your computer afterwards.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

After you've followed the above instructions for McAfee and have restarted your computer, install HijackThis. Make sure to install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

After it's installed, run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Windows Defender comes as part of Windows Vista and can't be uninstalled, but it can be disabled from automatically loading and running.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Uncheck Windows Defender or MSASCUI (whichever one is present).

Click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list clearly.

Scroll down to and then double-click on Windows Defender.

Change the setting from "Automatic" to "Disabled" or "Manual" and then click Apply - OK.

Close the window and then restart your computer.

Windows Defender will no longer automatically load and run.

You don't need it anyway because Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware do a better job.

-----------------------------------------------------------

When was the last time that you updated Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware and then ran a "quick scan" with them and then allowed them to fix EVERYTHING they found?

I'm glad to hear that.

Make sure to run their update function before doing a scan with them. Some users tend to forget that.

Too much protection...
Quote:
malwarebytes anti-malware, superanti-spyware, and avast anti virus
First of all this is my opinion from experience, I think to much software protection is a no no. We use only avast antivirus and zone alarm firewall. All of our computers run smoothly and this has been since 2 years ago and never been infected again. Well, we take care of our systems though. I have never used malwarebytes and superanti-spyware, besides avast comes with antyspyware included. So, I don't see the need of another program doing the same thing. But again this is only my experience and this has been worked for us. Not everything works for everyone, so cheers
