Thumbs up A good security tool
Hi all,

Just thought I'd post about an old tool that I've started using a lot lately. Over the past month I've spent a lot of time removing viruses people got through drive by downloads despite having up to date anti-virus software.

I guess a lot of guys here will already know about Sandboxie but I thought it should make a worthy addition to the 'Security Help Tools' sticky.

Sandboxie is a free tool which allows you to run programs in a sandboxed area of the filesystem, and as a result keeps any unwanted malware restricted to that sandbox. It was originally developed specifically for IE but now it's grown into a pretty useful tool which can run most programs. The free version is sufficient for most uses. I guess it's not quite as good as doing all of your browsing in a Virtual Machine, but it's a great additional security layer with almost no operating overhead.

I'm not sure on forum policy so I wont post a link, but it's not a difficult URL to guess.

I've never tried it myself but can it conflict with other security programs (e.g. antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware in real-time protection like MBAM...)?

Does it affect Internet browsing speed?

Can it interfere with Windows Updates or antivirus definition updates?

Does it slow down applications on your computer a little?

Does it need a lot of configuration and exception setups?

Thanks

Ok, I've found some info on the website about conflicts. It may conflict with my Canon printer.

Yes it's a great program, Here's the link for others, http://sandboxie.com/ it should be fine.

I've used it for about 2 years now, it hasn't failed me yet and that includes testing it against live malware samples.

It's a very small, light, yet powerful program.

I wrote 2 pages in the library in case anyone is interested.

I'm not kev51773 but hopefully no one minds me answering.
in order
  1. It shouldn't conflict with any anti-malware programs since it's not an anti-virus, anti-spyware etc. it's a sandbox program and it was designed to be used along with anti-malware software,
Though actually some webscanners don't work in sandboxie so I'm not sure if Eset's will you'd have to try it. though not a huge deal IMO since everything is contained in the sandbox anyway.

  2. I've never noticed any slowdowns with browsing.

  3. It shouldn't interfere with AV updates unless you try to sandbox your AV (I've never tried something like that and I wouldn't recommend it)
And for windows updates it shouldn't interfere unless get them through IE in that case just make sure to not sandbox IE.

  4. The only applications it should slow down would be the one you open sandboxed and if anything it might just slow the opening of the application by about a second or so.

  5. It should run fine with default settings but it depends how you want to use it,
So it's safe as is but if you want to change things that's up to you,
Maybe poke holes in the sandbox so your bookmarks don't get deleted when you empty the sandbox... Configuration changes vary from user to user like any application.

I see the conflict with canon printers, Though the 2 I saw have solutions but perhaps you're not happy with the solutions? or you're referring to a different conflict from the 2 I saw?

Gizzy,

Thank you very much for the info. I might give Sandboxie a try.
