So far, I don't care for the SpyNet. I never participate in those things but with this, you don't have an opt out option.

It will give a popup when it starts to send a report and you can then cancel instead of send.

I was worried about that part of MSE also.

This link has two ways to disable Spynet.

I tried the registry version and couldn't get the "Permissions" change to work.

Didn't try the hosts file one.

When I installed MSE I got rid of Spybot and SuperAntispyware but left SpywareBlaster on my pc.

Checked on SB this morning to see about an update and found a lot of the protection items disabled. Reenabled all protection and the SB logo changed to the MSE logo.

I guess MSE does some of the same things and doesn't want another program taking over some of it's duties.

Can someone tell me if MSE has improved on it's data base updates? I have Avast at the moment but was interested in possibly changing but have heard reports that MSE only updates weekly whereas Avast is daily, info would be much appreciated thanks!

That is weird. It was only updating weekly on mine also and I was going to change back to Avira and it started updating daily. Always different times but it does update daily

From what i read on the MSE forums, the updates are working at different times for people. Some are being updated daily some every 2 or three days and some weekly. Here is a comment from a microsoft moderator

No, you are updated automatically on a schedule once per day (you can't change the check time) plus a catch-up update check if the scheduled one was missed, plus a check at scan if you have that option selected.
The feature change would be that the updates used to clash with AU/WU in that you would sometimes find multiple updates offered via WU when MSE had not yet caught up. MSE now apparently handles the updates exclusively and they should not be offered in WU/AU any longer. (At least that's how I understand the change). There are other discussions regarding the minimal changes in signatures and why you should not worry about the frequency of updates. Your PC is not considered *at risk* by MSE itself unless it has not updated in a week. Don't forget that the MSE heuristics detection capability is in play, too. Signature based scanning/protection is only one part of the equation *and* by the time signatures have been updated, the threats are already fairly old.

thanks boo! I've read a few and see that many are still complaining about updates and also false positives that have been said could increase!
Guess I need to read further and find other articles on the programme before making a decision to switch

I do two manual updates everyday as I don't have anything updating on auto, just me.
