can't complete virus scan
I use windows vista home basic and Avira AntiVir antivirus protection.
When I try to do a scan it gets slower and slower until the computer freezes up about a quarter of the way through the scan.
I tried a system restore - but after the computer restarted a window came up that there an error occurred and it was unable to do the system restore. I tried the restore in safe mode and it worked but the scanning problem still remains.

thanks

Which model number in this list pertains to your laptop?

----------------------------------------------------------------

Because the antivirus program freezes during a scan is no reason to run System Restore. You're going to cause yourself even more grief doing that.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2. Close all open windows and then install it. After it's installed, run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less. Save the resulting log in Notepad. Return here to your thread and then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Here is the support and software site for the Compaq Presario F503AU laptop.

I suggest that you keep this site saved in your browser favorites list for reference to when needed.

---------------------------------------------------------------

From what I can determine, that laptop comes with 512 MB of RAM, but is capable of supporting up to 2048 MB of RAM.

If that's the case, I highly suggest that you max out the RAM amount because Windows Vista is very memory-hungry and runs much better with 2048 MB or more.

Is it running Windows Vista Basic?

---------------------------------------------------------------

There are too many startup entries and services that are loading during startup and running in the background that don't need to be doing so.

I can assist you with trimming down the loadup load.

Trimming down the startup load will improve speed and performance and shorten startup time and reduce the risks of freezes and error messages.

I suspected it came with Vista Basic since it came with only 512 MB of RAM.

Yes, you can replace the RAM modules yourself. There will be 1 or 2 panels on the bottom of the laptop that you will need to unscrew and remove. The modules are held flat with 2 retaining pins. You need to move the retaining pins out of the way and then raise the modules to about a 45 degree angle and then pull them out of their slots. The new modules go in the reverse order. You also want to remove the battery and unplug the power cord before removing and replacing modules.

I'm guessing that laptop has a single 512 MB module and has an empty module bay. If that's the case, you can add a 512 MB or 1024 MB module to the empty bay. If you decide to max out the RAM, then you'll insert a 1024 MB module in both bays.

thank you so much for your help (and generosity)
I've just ordered 1024 m of RAM
Do you think I still need to get rid of some of the excess start-up programs?

Yes, trimming down the startup load will shorten startup time, improve speed and performance, and reduce the risks of freezes and error messages.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Follow my instructions carefully and take your time.

The startup entries that I've highlighted in bold text may or may not have .exe in the names in your computer, so be aware of that.

Some of these startup entries don't need to load and run at all, and others can be manually started when needed.

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

Remove the checkmark in

HP Health Check Scheduler C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\HP Health Check\HPHC_Scheduler.exe

SunJavaUpdateSched C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe

NvCplDaemon RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup

NvMediaCenter RUNDLL32.EXE C:\Windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit

RegisterHPDeviceDetectionDll regsvr32.exe

WMPNSCFG C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe

Microsoft Find Fast C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

Office Startup C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA.EXE

Microsoft Office C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

After you're done, click Apply - OK - Exit Without Restart.

Click Start - Run, type in SERVICES.MSC and then click OK.

Expand the services window to see the list more clearly.

Highlight and double-click on

Google Updater Service (gusvc)

HP Health Check Service

hpqwmiex

NVIDIA Display Driver Service (nvsvc)

stllssvr

XAudioService

Change the setting from Automatic(if currently set there) to Manual, then click Apply - OK. (Note: You have to change the setting in one entry at a time).

After you're done, close the services window and then restart your computer.

Run a HijackThis scan and then post that new log here.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Do you actually use the "quick play" and "quick launch" button features?
