Internet Options -Security settings - GONE!
Hi, I cannot open certain internet links because the system says my security settings do not allow it. So I go to the Control Panel -Internet Options -Security screen and there is nothing there! I should see some icons for Internet/ Trusted Zones etc in the 1st box - there are none; it is blank. I should be able to select a security level but the apply button is greyed out. I can make no changes to whatever the computer has set itself as and I cannot open important study documents which are essential for my course.
Help please - what do I do?

Have you tried a reset?

Open Internet Explorer, click on Tools > Internet Options > Advanced tab > Reset

Hi, yes, have tried that - no change whatever. The option is 'Restore Defaults' and it doesn't restore anything as far as I can see. The Security zones box is still blank.

The O/S is Windows XP Home version 5.1.
Somebody has suggested dumping Internet Explorer as the web-browser and moving to Firefox - what do you think?

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

What's your version of Internet Explorer?

Check your registry and see if the following entries are present as they should be for your zones to appear:

Click on Start > Run > type regedit

Navigate to the following registry keys:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\1

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\2

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\3

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\4

With all their content in the right pane.

You should have the same in HKCU.

Yes, there is plenty of content in the RH pane for each of Zones 0,1,2,3,4. Don't know where HKCU is though. HijackThis log is as follows:

Could you please run the latest version of HijackThis found here?

You have quite a few outdated applications on your computer.

You should update to Internet Explorer 7. It might even solve your problem.

You have a very old version of Java. The latest is Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0_16.

You also have an old version of AVG. Is it even working properly? You seem to have many missing files... Please run the latest version of HijackThis to see if it will show the same thing.

OK, new version of HijackThis loaded and run - results as below.

Re AVG we have actually ditched this - it required to be upgraded to version 8 which conflicted with Zone Alarm's upgraded version. This gave us enormous problems and we eventually did a system restore to a date prior to upgrading these. This in turn gave us further enormous problems including loss of all sorts of information. We have struggled ever since.

Re Java I have downloaded the new version........but get a message saying that Windows Installer isn't working and so it won't run it.

Sigh...

To remove AVG completely, use the AVG Remover.

And do install an antivirus program as soon as possible.
