I currently have Symantic Antivirus Corp Edition. I am reading about new Microsoft free Antivirus program. Do you recommend one over the other? I suspect that my current Symantic software is slowing my machine down

Don't change antivirus programs based solely on your belief that it may be slowing down your computer.

Brand, model, model number

Processor speed

Amount of RAM

Hard drive size and amount of free space

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - Startup(tab).

How many entries have a checkmark?

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete at the same time to open Windows Task Manager and then click Processes(tab).

How many running processes are there?

I have a Dell Dimension DIM 4600; Pentium R4 CPU 240 GHZ; 2.50 GHZ Ram; I had 512 and just added 2 gigs last week; It did help somewhat, but I think it should be faster.
Startup in Msconfig has 5 Boxes checked; I had eliminated a lot of them
Processes running in Task Mgr = 39

Thanks for the computer specs. I'm glad to see that you pumped up the RAM amount.

Can you post a HijackThis log here so we can see what's installed and running in the background and if any obvious infection is present?

Go in the Device Manager and expand "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers", then check the advanced settings in "Primary IDE channel" and "Secondary IDE Channel" and make sure the transfer mode is DMA and not PIO.

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open windows, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

If either or both IDE channels was running in PIO mode, that can have a noticable negative affect on performance and speed.

Your computer is running both in DMA mode, so it's okay.

Do a HijackThis scan, put a checkmark in

stanstash is already using Symantec Norton Antivirus.

You never ever want to install and use 2 antivirus programs at the same time.

I removed Logitech Desktop Messinger via Control Panel. When I went to C:Program Files, the Logitech Messenger folder was gone.

Wow ! You are giving me some workout.
In C: Program files-Logitech; The folder in there is : Logitech Webcam Software, Apparantly
when I removed the Logitech Program from control panel the Messinger folder was eliminated.

You're not listening to me.

I advised you to delete only the Desktop Messenger folder from inside the C:\Program Files\Logitech folder.

I didn't tell you to delete any other folder from inside the Logitech folder.

If you have a Logitech webcam and/or a Logitech mouse and have software installed for them, there will be additional folders for them inside the Logitech folder.
