Ant-virus & Firewall
For those of you that don't like to pay for protection.
If you use ATT.net or sbcglobal.net McAfee is part of the service.
Free, free, free Not a big fan of McAfee but its FREE.
(would rather use Norton, but its $69 year)

Microsoft has released it's Security Essentials 1.0, it's free as well, and no nags either.

I think that 'best' is stretching it a bit; there are so many solid products for free on the market in the a/v arena alone that you have literally dozens to choose from; I'm not a huge fan of bitdefender, but we use it at my company for machines in the field, so I'm pretty familiar with it.

For my rigs at the house, I use avira for the windows machines, and avg for the linux.

ask 100 people, you're likely going to get 100 different answers.
