Solved: Controlling McAfee
I am running windows XP. I have McAfee security software supplied free by my broadband supplier. Almost every time I boot up my PC, McAfee starts a virus scan which slows everything down drastically and takes a fair time to complete. Can I controll McAfee so that it only runs once a month say?

I don't use McAfee VirusScan, but it has settings just like any other anti-virus program that can be changed to suit your needs.

You apparently have it set to scan during startup or scan after startup. Browse around in the tools/options/preferences settings until you find the setting(s) that need to be changed.

Personally, I keep automatically scanning turned off because I like to have complete control over when my anti-virus program runs a scan.

Thanks for this. After a bit of searching I found the scheduler. However I think I'll follow your lead and turn off auto virus run and just run to my needs. Again thanks.

Check the settings carefully and make sure that you don't disable any crucial scanning and update features.

It definitely doesn't need to do a scan every time you start your computer though.
