Solved: Best Antivirus ?
Last year I got and installed McAfee on my older computer and not like it. It is very slow to scan and download. While it downloads, it not even shows how much % is downloaded so I never have an idea how long it will take to finish the download. Also, often it happens that McAfee shows me a message that my computer is not fully protected. I must then click on the icon to open the Security Center, it takes a while to open, then I must click on a button named "Fix". It takes another while until it finally tells me that now my computer is protected. I wonder why the program not do it automatic.
End of this month it is finally expiring and I am trying to check what other antivirus may be better. i found a link http://www.2010softwarenews.com/defa...ord=EAntivirus with lots of antivirus, but I never heard before of them. Have anyone a good suggestion?

I currently use McAfee, but I don't know I would say it is the best. Several members here recommend Avira and Avast.

Thank you for the answers. I not want to download any unknown antivirus and later find out that I installed a trojan or virus instead of an antivirus.

NOD32 should be on top of the list.

And what the ... is The Shield Deluxe???

According to WOT, the website has a bad reputation. I don't think users have been too impressed by this nobody...

imo AVG Free is the best. i tried Avast and its not my kind of AV, if your going to have an AV(recamended lol) than you might want something else as backup, like Malwearbytes, that is recamended by almost EVERYONE on this site, if you end up downloading a rouge virus(gives you virus's and makes you pay for no protection) than malwarebytes will erase it compleatly, if you look for AVG Free...well ill give you a link, the top website(if you google it) is a rouge AV, and im going to try and report them and get them taken off.

whenever you are downloading a AV, make sure you look at it before you download it...make sure it says the name of the program you want..or its probably rouge.

becarefull on what you get.

and no AV(anti virus) gives full\perfect protection, and thats including ones you pay for. so you will want malwarebytes and some spywear protection( spywearblaster is what i have...runs in the background for the most part, i do not recamend spybot S&D unless you read the tutorial\instructions first, or you could damiage your computer) i will give you a link from when i posted the same question, on this link there will be links to MOT of the programs...but not any AV's so i will give you AVG Free's link in a bit. i think that kasperskeys is a good program(i spelt it wrong) and that will also be on this link. it installs, than after you scan and fix everything, it uninstalls if you want it to(uninstall it, so the next time you use it it will be updated, its a safe and free program...the website dosent look the best, but it is lagit)

all of these programs(or most of them) are free, there are some programs that are BETTER when free, and most of the free programs are better than the ones you buy, more money goes to updateing(donations are given from some people)

http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...ree-virus.html
look at the 2nd post, all the others are debates, no other programs are metioned(none that are woth anything)

P.S. Malwearbytes is the best program in the world, imo(in my opinion) and it will get virsus off your computer that you dont even know are there.

If you absolutely, mandatorily, matter of life and death, obligatorily, with no doubt in your mind, and you won't be able to eat the next day........ go free..., I would try Avira Antivir. But, IMHO, no free antivirus will be quite as good as the best paid ones like NOD32, BitDefender or Kaspersky to stop malware at the gate. You'll also get a lot more definition updates daily and a technical support. If you can afford a coffee a day, cigarettes and booze, you certainly can pay for an antivirus.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is not an antivirus and doesn't do miracles. It's a good complement to have (free version) but I also recommend SuperAntiSpyware (free) and SpywareBlaster free (doesn't run in the background - it installs killbits in the registry to prevent known malware from settling in).

now, i never said that Malwarebytes was a AV. like i said Avira is not good, but thats imo not yours. its not a good program and does not catch much if anything, Malwarebytes will catch more than it will(more than most AV's, but you still need av) malwearbytes will catch new virus's that you dont even know are there, the first time i ran it i got around 700 virus's and spwear.

free programs for the most part are better, if you buy a program the money goes to pay people and some goes to upgrades and that kind of stuff.

free programs get huge donations from companys and business's...all of that money goes to upgrading the program. they make no money from the programs...they cant.(in taxes they do...i think, but not from us) and i had norton....bought it, $100 down the drain...i ran scans everyday and my computer went slower than i thought possable...right when it ran out i got AVG Free and malwearbytes....my computer runs faster than the school computers....and they run fast!!! yes i am a school kid but ive had lots of probloms with my laptop....i learn from those probloms, i know enough to recamend good free programs. norton took up so much(biggest reason why my computer was going slow) and NEVER cought a virus...or anything at all...i spent $100 for nothing...i got a free program and now my computer runs awsome.

not trying to be rude but you did two things to me, you repeated what i said and tried to take credit for it, than you came out and said i was wrong. my opinion is not wrong especiouly sence most mods on here told me these programs and that they are better than most if not all programs you pay for. i looked it up...its true. if you look at the link i posted in my post before this, a mod gave me links to all of those programs...they are mods for a reason, we should all take in and think about what they tell us, and to tell someone that they are wrong when a highley respected mod tell them that thats how it is....well its just not smart. thanks for helping this person out, and im not trying to start a war, i agree with the first thing you said, about going free....but i said that before...

http://free.avg.com/ww-en/download-a...s-free-edition
thats AVG Free, the good site lol, you can choose between the one you buy or the free...go for the free

oh and i do not recamend bootzilla....it scans and dosent do anything after that, unless you want to pay, dont get it, but it does find alot of stuff.(i said that because it was on the first link i put there, i went back to download something and saw it)

and try that link for kaspersky...dosent work for me, but alot of programs wont work beacouse of my aunt, she messed soemthing up i need to fix lol. if the link dont work for you pelase tell me and i will try to get a new link, plus that will tell me if its me or if everyone is having bad luck downloading porgrams lol

Hi Kitkin15.

I have never heard of companies giving huge donations to free antivirus products and their companies. Don't know where you heard that.

When you pay for an antivirus product, some money goes to profit the business owner, some goes to pay for the virus researchers' salaries and some goes to purchasing equiptment, paying rent for the office, paying electric bills etc. and some goes into advertising. Thats not a comprehensive list of things of how your money is spent, but it is a more complete idea. But you have to think this way, if more people buy their antivirus, they can hire more virus researchers and, hopefully, analyse more viruses.

Free AV companies also have products which you have to buy, which is most probably enterprise versions of their products. They are giving away the home versions for free to build a reputation. And hope that the free-AV user ( home user ) will buy their product when their workplace needs one.

Please don't compare Norton to NOD32, BitDefender or Kaspersky. They're not from the same league.

Everybody (well almost...) has problems with Norton and McAfee. Go through the forum and you'll find a LOT of negative comments about them. Norton is the only company with a technical representative here on TSG. Now why is that? In this case, you're better off with AVG and Avast.

In my opinion, if Norton and McAfee are still in the business, that's because they offer good corporate deals for companies...
