Solved: Total Care Advisor
I accidentally deleted my total care advisor as I was supposedly installing a new update. Can I recover the advisor or can I safely operate my computer without it?

The only way that you could have "deleted" HP Total Care Advisor was to uninstall it in the Add Or Remove Programs(XP) or Programs And Features(Vista) list.

It's part of the extra crap that HP/Compaq puts in new computers. It's not needed and it can be problematic. Don't worry about reinstalling it.

Thank You flavalee:
I will take your advice and not worry about the reinstallation of the HP TOTOL CARE ADVISOR. I really only used it for updates anyway and can get those from control panel(security). I must admit I was panicked as I have messed up the computer before by clicking where I shouldn't have. Again I thank you and keep advising the knuckleheads like me!

What updates were you using it for?

When the Advisor bar came up, I clicked on the shield, then went to "check for updates" or it would show that there were updates ready to be installed. These were either recommended or optional. The same window comes up when I go to control panel and click on "check for updates" in the security section.

Are you referring to Windows updates? If you are, get them via the Windows updates site and not via HP Total Care Advisor or through some other means.

The Security Center monitors your computer to make sure that an antivirus program is installed and running and that the firewall is on and that Windows updates is on. If all the settings are correct, they'll be in green and not in orange or red.

Yes, I was referring to windows updates. My security is fine as my indicators are all green. I currently go to control panel, and under the security heading, I click on "check for updates" to get them I totally forgot about going to the microsoft windows site for updates.I will henceforth. Thanks!!

OK, I know what you're referring to now. You're referring to the "Check for the latest updates from Windows update" link in the Security Center. I've never heard of anyone checking for Windows updates that way.

Personally, I open Internet Explorer, then click Tools - Windows Update, then do a scan. I prefer the custom scan so I can select the updates that I want to install.

Now you know what I was talking about. I told you I was a knucklehead. Oh, I do not have Windows Update when I click on tools in Internet Explorer.

Windows Update is part of the menu of Tools in Internet Explorer, and always has been. It's also in the Start menu.

If you want to put that site in your favorites list and name it "Windows Updates" so you can access it easily, here is the link to it:

OK, I see what you're doing now. You're in the upper right corner of the browser window.

Go back to that Tools, scroll down to Toolbars, then put a checkmark in Menu Bar.

6 entries will appears in the upper left: File Edit View Favorites Tools Help.

You'll find it much easier to navigate and make setting changes from there.
