free start up bootable antivirus scan software
Hello, does anyone know of a preferably free antivirus software that I could boot my computer with and scan it for malware, viruses? I am using windows xp with no AV enabled. Currently my computer won't boot just keeps on restarting, safe modes and the last good configuration option don't work. I am suspecting a virus. Please help.

You can try booting from the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows. It includes malware removal tools among a lot of other useful tools.

Phantom, did you use that tool? sounds interesting but it is kind of hard to decide what plugins to use with it.

These are all the tools included with the UBCD.

No, I haven't tried it. Never had to.

UBCD is a great tool but it has rather old out of date virus and spyware tools . Try this which is one of the few that will update once boot into:

This one is good also, at least as far as creating the boot CD....

You can have it built in a half hour, using the latest version available.

It did use NOD32 but has switched to MS Security Essentials. I have not booted up with it yet or used anything on it- perhaps someone here has more specific experience with BZ and I would like to hear if anyone has input on it....

The package includes ImgBurn utility that starts automatically and pops up to create the bootable .ISO disc for you. Totally easy great for the novice. However.....there are some utilities on it for example, ComboFix....that should be used with assistance from an advisor, not by yourself unless you are aware of the ins and outs, and have a copy of the full directions for using CF handy.
