Windows Defender problem
Hey everyone. I'm having a problem with Windows Defender. When I boot up, the service doesn't start. It brings up a "Windows Defender has stopped working" dialog box. It gives me an option to turn it on, and after choosing that option, it works again. If I attempt to start the service from services.msc, it starts and immediately stops, claiming it has no tasks to complete.

I am running WinXP Pro, SP3, fully updated.

I have AVG Free 9, Windows Defender, and Secunia PSI. I do not have any Norton, Mcafee, or Windows Live One Care products on the system, nor have I ever.

The service is set to automatic, log on as local account, not interacting with the desktop.

It worked fine until 3 days ago.

I have another system that is set up to the same configuration. I will post an update later as to whether I'm having the problem with the other computer.

Uninstall Windows Defender from that computer and replace it with the free version of

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004

Click the green icon at each site to download them.

Close all open windows, then install them.

Allow them to update their definition files during the install process.

(Run a quick scan with them about once a week, then allow them to fix EVERYTHING they find. Make sure to update them before running a scan. They're very user-friendly, they do a very good job, and they're well known and recommended in these forums.)

I'm glad to see that you're not using McAfee, Symantec Norton, or Windows OneCare Live.

I only used malwarebytes twice, when a few got through, and I've never heard of the other one. I like defender, and from my experience, I am relatively secure.

no one has heard of this problem?

Supaduparocka, I have the exact same problem. It started a few days ago subsequent to my upgrading to AVG9.0. I have to believe that there is a cause/effect relationship between the upgrade to AVG9.0 and Windows Defender insisting I turn it on when I boot up. But have not been able to resolve. It is no big deal but just an irritant to have to manually turn on Windows Defender every time I boot up.

If I can't resolve and it becomes too bothersome, I may well try the suggestion offered in the following web site, although it is targeted for Vista and I am running XP.

Flavallee, according to this web site you cannot uninstall Windows Defender in Vista. Perhaps XP is different. If you can uninstall in XP, I think your recommendation would be the way to go. Have you ever uninstalled Windows Defender in XP?

Red Boy:

supaduparocka advised that he has Windows XP and not Windows Vista. That's why I advised him to uninstall Windows Defender. I'm aware that it can't be uninstalled in Windows Vista because it's part of the operating system. It can be disabled though.

And yes, I have installed and then uninstalled Windows Defender in Windows XP.

Thanks, Flavallee, I have uninstalled Windows Defender without any problem. All seems fine now. Your expert attention, as usual, is appreciated.
