AVG 8.5 Free Edition (real-time) has been great for me along with a few other free utilities
I use either in real-time or on-demand scans.
Good luck.

Avira is one of the best. Check on Google for top antivirus software. Avira has kept my computer safe for a long time.

The top 5 free ones according to Gizmos site are:

Avira
Microsoft security essentials
Avast
AVG
A-Squared free
Different sites will rate them differently and everyone has their own personal preference so the best thing is to try some and see how you like them. If you want a paid one then just google them.

For free antivirus programs

Avira AntiVir Personal 9.0.0.407

Alwil Avast Home Edition 4.8.1356

AVG Free Edition 9.0.686

are the recommended ones in these forums.

For paid antivirus programs

ESET NOD32 4.0.468

is the top rated one in these forums.

The current issue of "PC World" magazine had a big article on several antivirus programs that it tested. The results were surprising as to which ones placed low on the scale.
