Free alternative to Avast?
Is there another good, free anti-virus, other than Avast out there? User friendly would be nice too.
Thanks, help is always greatly appreciated.

WHY, whats wrong with AVAST? it is user friendly, easy to use and does what it is supposed to do and does it well, doesnt hog system resources like others I could name either, its free too, what more do you want?

i also like the fact that it works unattended - so updates automatically and when you do need to upgrade to a new version - its clear on how to install the free version - ideal for my friends and family who dont want to know anything about managing a PC

problems with computer
I'm having problems with a neophyte's computer, and the way she registered Avast. Updating is very problematic, and just switching to another free anti virus program was something I would at least consider. This is not blasphemy is it? I'm just trying to consider my alternatives.

no problem at all - I was going to mention it when I posted my first post - but decided to just answer the question, however, following jack hackett post - i thought i would support ....
I have two very elderly people in 80s using PCs and this seemed the best option...

Normally you just load the homeuse free version, register for a key, which is emailed (you have to do this annually ) and it updates...

I just removed AVG from my wife's laptop, because it was hogging resources and rendered it almost impossible to use during a scan. Avast is a good one. I used it before, and should've just left it in place. Avira is also a nice free one, but every time it updates, it give you a dialogue box to buy the pay version. That gets tiresome.

I used Avira for the past three weeks and it has been good but I gotta switch back to the new version of AVG (9.0), Avira pops up everyday in many instances prompting you to purchase the software premium version, how irritating......
