Question Odd files in Windows/temp folder
Every 4 to 10 minutes a file is created in my Windows/temp directory. The files are binary and encrypted. All the files start with “dat” followed by a 4 number/letter sequence, and ending with a “tmp” extension. Example datD2F8.tmp All of the files are 226kb in size. Whatever is creating them is not deleting them.

Know any thing about these files?

These 2 temp folders:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp (XP and Vista)

C:\Documents And Settings\(Username)\Local Settings\Temp (XP)

C:\Users\(Username)\AppData\Local\Temp (Vista)

accumulate files on a regular basis. The non-Windows temp folder will accumulate a lot more than the Windows temp folder.

Unless you do a lot of installing and updating programs and creating new files, deleting the contents of these 2 temp folders a couple of times a month is sufficient.

There's no reason for letting those files annoy you.

Yes a lot of files find there way into the temp folders. However, these files are written very 4 to 10 minutes and that is hundreds of files a day at 226 kb. This is not normal and therefore the question.

I don't know what's being used in your computer or how it's being used, so I can't give you an answer as to why they're frequently created.
