Belkin F5D7230-4 trying to securre
Hello Guys,

Belkin F5D7230-4

It's me again! What would I do without all of you to help a (PC) challenged guy like me.
I have the above wireless router set up at home. With a 'hard wire' into my desktop PC. I managed to connect everything OK and my (and other) laptops connect just fine using the wireless connection. I am however concerned that I have never been able to secure the system, and even following instructions e-mailed to me by Belkin (they seemed to miss a chunk out of what I had to do, or did not explain the option to make if given a choice at certain stages) it is still unsecure after many months. I would welcome any suggestions you can give. I was sure that I had registered and logged into the site at least twice in the past, to try making the settings, but I can not even get this far now. Confused...I am. But on past experience I am guessing at least one or two of you will know just how to help me muddle through in a way I can understand.

Thanks guys.

Chris.

I assume the secruity you are after is for the wireless signal ?
is that correct

A lot of routers come pre setup with secruity enabled

When you 1st connect a machine to the wireless did it ask for a password ? - if so you have a secure wireless (depending on what type of setting will depend how secure)

otherwise
you need to log into the router and set up secruity/encryption in the wireless section

I'll look up the manual and see if i can post

goto page 24 of this manual
http://cache-www.belkin.com/support/...30-4v7_man.pdf

that tells you how to log into the router - use the PC that is already cabled to the router

On page 25 - you see the layout of the screen
notice on the lefthandside
Wireless
then under that
secruity
Page 48 - tells you about wireless secruity

Choose WPA2, its the strongest.

Don't forget to change the Administrator password. And write it down somewhere, as you won't need to access the router very often after configuration and may forget it.

I usually stick the code on the bottom of the router for people I instal.

also be aware some older machines may not work with some of those options - start with WPA2 and work backwards to WEP

Some cordless phones can interfer with connection - if this happens and you cannot connect any machine even at WEP - then change the wireless channel (in the router settings) use ch 1, or 6, or 11

Sadly i am thinking of giving up on this. Just can not get it to work. not even getting to the stage where when connecting on laptop it asks for a password. I have to disable to get laptop connected again. Frustrating.
