I love avast - I use it on 5 different PC and laptops. Has saved my butt numerous times.

If you want to get some use out of it, install Ubuntu. It should run plenty fast and give you an interesting education.
I have also put older PCs up on our local Freecycle, and they're always snapped up instantly.
