Platinum
Hi Everyone

My husband was lent a DVD and he used it on one of my computers. Unfortunately this DVD is obviously a dodgy one and it has added something to my computer and altered settings on it. Now when I turn the computer on a screen comes up with graphics and PLATINUM written across it. Does anyone have any idea what this might be or how to remove it? It altered the date and time settings on my computer - I am not sure if it altered anything else but the computer is now very, very slow. How would I find out the extent of the damage done?

The computer is running windows XP

Any help would be very gratefully received but please bear in mind that I am only mildly computer literate.

Many thanks
Kerry

- Re-boot into safe-mode (press F8 to show the startup options when booting and choose safe mode with networking)
- Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version on left)
- Do a full scan and delete any nasties that it finds

Post back with the results.

I have just run the malware software and it came back as no infection. Any suggestions as to what I can try next?

Many thanks

If Mbam didn't find anything then it is highly unlikely (but not impossible) that your problem is malware-related. It is probably due to some legitimate software that was installed by the DVD in question. It's worth doing a full virus scan of your system in safe mode just to be sure, using whatever anti-virus software you have installed.

After that, go through the list of installed programs and see if anything looks like platinum:
- start menu -> control panel -> add/remove programs
otherwise you could try installing winpatrol and then go to the list of startup programs and disable (right-click->disable) everything except winpatrol and your antivirus and firewall software. Then reboot and see if the problem has disappeared.

Many thanks for your further assistance - I would be lost without it.

Regards the add/remove programs section, I have already checked there and nothing is listed that wasn't there before.

Whatever it is that has been added is trying to connect to the internet so I don't think it is something legitimate. If I try to do anything on the computer it just keeps seizing up and it usually seizes as something is trying to make a connection with the internet.

I will try your suggestions and then update.

All the best

Some malware is difficult, if not impossible, to remove whilst running the operating system which it is infecting. You could try building a BartPE boot disk on a clean system (a friends etc.) and booting from this to run anti-virus and anti-malware or try the Avira rescue cd (again write the disk on a clean system).

If you continue to have problems, I would take your computer to a specialist or pay someone to come to you, unless you know any techies.

Thanks for your extra suggestions but they are way out of my league of computer ability. I was hoping it might be something that I can deal with but I suspect I am going to have to take it into a computer specialist and get them to deal with it. :-(

Many thanks for your guidance.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything
