Solved: AVG Free 9.0 offered?
Win XP home-IE 6-Outlook Express 6

AVG is advising their users to upgrade to AVG 9.0 from AVG 8.5. They say 8.5 will not receive security updates and be supported after 12/1/09.

I upgraded from AVG 7.5 to 8.5 about 6 months ago. The download experience was not pleasant! But AVG stopped supporting 7.5 after about three years and forced me to go to 8.5.

Now they are telling me to go to 9.0 after only 6 months!. I believe 8.5 has only been out of beta less that a year or so. Do I have to go through the painfull process again if I want to stay with AVG?

Please advise!

I dont understand, Why was the download painfull, do you have dial up??

Wont recieve security updates after 12/1/09? Do they have a time machine? Or Are you mm/dd/yy or do you mean 12/1/10?

Its wise to go with AVG9

I paid for 8.5 and im changing soon.

I upgraded to AVG 9 on both of our computers a couple of weeks ago. No problem...

Nebastion:

I have high speed DSL but I had to get a special removal tool to remove 7.5 before I could load 8.5 and it failed 3 times before success. Many on the forum have had the same problems and many have gone to another program because of that. Search 8.5 on the forum if you question me!

The window promoting 9.0 Free definitely said install 9.0 before 12/1/09 when updates to 8.5 free will stop! AVG kept threatening to stop upgrades to 7.5 for almost 15 months before they actually did so I guess the same will probably apply this time?

The 8.5 free addition has run as well after the bugs were out as 7.5 did so I guess I'll just wait!

Checked cnet comments--lots of negatives on 9.0--until all the bugs are out whenever that happens.

Any other experiences out there?

mano:

AVG 9.0 will install over and replace AVG 8.5, so there's no need to uninstall it first.

Decline to install the AVG toolbar and the Yahoo search engine crap, unless you want them for some reason.

After you restart, you'll be prompted to run an "optimized scan". If you do run it, it'll tie up your computer for several minutes.
