Bad Virus...cannot run AVG or any malware or HJT
I am trying to help my sis-n-law by trying to "fix" her computer. First thing I did was download Super Anti Spyware, MBAM, and HJT. I ran SAS and successfully removed 21 items and restarted computer. Then I tried MBAM and it started to scan then shutdown/stop abruptly. So I try to start it again and now it says

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

So I try HTJ so I can post in the forums and it starts to scan and like MBAM it stops abruptly with no warning. So I try and run it again and get the same message.

"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item"

I try to scan with AVG and no success. I get a message
"Application cannot be executed. The file avgscanx.exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software now? Yes/No

I tried to start in "safe" mode to scan and cannot use anything.

She is also constantly having the pop up "Antivirus System Pro alert"

Please Advise

You should have posted in the Malware Removal & HijackThis Logs forum.

Try changing the file name of MBAM and see that works.

Also, you can try some online antivirus scanners, like TrendMicro Housecall, Panda ActiveScan. They run as an activeX through IE.

I wanted to, but since I cannot run HJT or MBAM and produce a log and post it on the forum would it still be viable to post in the Malware Removal & HijackThis Logs forum?

What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance

I will try this. Should I try it in safe mode?

Thanks

You haven't specified which operating system you were using.

If using Windows XP, try downloading this fix: EXEFIX

Save it to your desktop and double click on it to merge it to your registry. Then, reboot and try installing and running HijackThis again. Make sure you have the latest version 2.0.2 from here.

If using Windows Vista, try downloading this fix: EXEFIX_Vista

Repeat the above procedure and reboot.

If you manage to get HijackThis running,

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

You'll need to post in the Malware Removal or HijackThis Logs forum whether you can run HJT or not. You'll need a malware removal expert's advice.

I've tried Housecall, Panda, EXEFIX and is getting stopped by the virus...saying that unable to execute.

At one point I kept clicking on all three one right after the other and Panda was able to run the first scan...and just as it was about to run a second part/scan the "virus" prevented it from executing and saying unable to connect.

I'm frustrated...thinking of just formatting drive c and starting fresh.
