How can you tell if your system has a virus? We have a PC and a laptop and within the past week they both have become very slow, whether using the internet or not. Like to open a program or just change users...Norton didn't indicate we have a problem but it is painfully slow all of a sudden. We don't receive any error messages. Once open, things work well. We have an appointment to upgrade our modem to a faster speed but that shouldn't affect internal operations (not internet), should it?

You cannot depend on just one antivirus program ( Norton, in your case) to be sure that you don't have a virus. None of the antivirus vendors can detect 100% of all viruses out there. Go do some online scans, like Trendmicro's Housecall and Panda's ActiveScan.

Also there is a EICAR test virus which you can download to verify if your on board antivirus is still functioning. As some malware disables antivirus programs.

You can never always tell if you have been infected. There are plenty of different ways you can be infected, the majority of the time you never even know it. Infections may just lie in the background, hogging up your memory or maybe even doing nothing.

Here are some online virus scans; run them and let us know if they catch anything:

ESET Online Scanner: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
Trend Micro HouseCall: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/housecall7
Kaspersky Online Scanner: http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/english/kavwebscan.html

Hi SUS800, you can also download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41 from this site
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ma..._anti_malware/. make sure you update it and run a scan with it. You can also download SuperAntiSpyware 4.29.1004 from here
http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/ make sure you update it and run a scan with it also. Most people in this forum will recommend these two programs. They are both the free versions. They are not resource hogs. You can run a scan with them on a regular basis. If you choose to try these two programs, click on the green icon on the right side of the page to download them. Hope it helps you.

SUZ800:

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

Go here and click the green icon to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41.

Go here and click the green icon to download SUPERAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004.

Close all open windows, then install HijackThis.

Run a scan with it - which will take less than 30 seconds.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Don't do anything yet with MBAM and SAS. Just download and save them for now.

Hi everyone. Thanks for the info. We ran a scan on Panda's ActiveScan. They found : Threats w/ free disinfection, low level danger (3). Threats disenfected w/ the paid version, low danger level (81) and 4 suspicious files.

We ran the Trendmicro's Housecall and found 1 that was corrected.

I was going to ask if you all could recommend which protection we should purchase and found the latest recommendation from Flavallee.

We'll give that a try and let you know.
Thanks, enjoy your Sunday

whenever I click on Hijackthis a window pops up indicating 'the program is already running. How do I get another scan? I tried going into the website and starting the download again so I could ask for a scan and log...I just keep getting the same window, 'already running'...

SUZ800:

You computer has a MyWebSearch infection, and likely has other infections.

Use the links that I gave you in post #6 to download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41 and SUPERAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004.

After they're both downloaded and saved, close all open windows and then install them.

Make sure to update their definition files during the install process.

After they're both installed, restart your computer.

Advise me when that's done, then I'll give you further instructions for using them and posting logs here.

Hi, I'm back!
I did as you asked and when I restarted the computer I received this error message:
"Error loading c:\Progra~1\mywebs~1\bar\.bin\m3PLUGIN.DLL. The specified module could not be found". I successfully installed SuperAntispyWare. When I tried doing the same process w/ Malwarebytes, there was no 'installation' option. However, at my 'start' icon I have an option to 'uninstall Malwarebytes'. However, there were options to run a scan.

SUZ800:

Go into "Programs And Features" and uninstall MyWebSearch.

Next, go into the C:\Program Files folder and delete the entire MyWebSearch folder - if it's still there.

You're saying you successfully installed and updated SUPERAntiSpyware, but not Malwarebytes?

Snail's pace
Good morning,
Good picture, by the way.
I went thru the download process you suggested. Malware... and Super...and Hijack all have icons on my desktop. When I went in to install Super it behaved like it was sposed to. When I clicked on Malware it didn't give me an option to install it. However, when I look at my Programs, Malware is there.
OK to proceed or do I need to start over?
I work from 10-7 PST so I won't be able to check with you til later. Thanks for all your help..told you I was a techno dope!
