Problems downloading anything possibly caused by av software removal
I am unable to download anything at all. I cannot download any attachments from my email or download applications. When I attempt to download something, the dialog box appears requesting me to run or save. I can click on either one and the box disappears showing the temporary folder as it attempts to download and then it disappears, doing nothing. I have had several problems with my computer since my trial period of Norton Antivirus expired. I attempted to download free AVG software until I could purchase new antivirus software, but it seemed like I had more problems with this. With all of my issues I uninstalled Norton and attempted to uninstall AVG, but the uninstallation of AVG failed, so there are still components of that on my system. It seems like I started having problems with downloading around the same time as I deleted the Norton. I have a Gateway Laptop that I just purchased in May, so its pretty new. I have Vista OS. If anyone can offer some tye of guidance I would appreciate it. I can't do anything without this capability. Thank you.

Hi mackcolin, try downloading the norton removal tool from here http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/U...val-Tool.shtml and the AVG removal tool from here
http://www.avg.com/us-en/download-tools run them both and they should remove anything remaining from AVG and Norton. Hopefully this helps you out.

This sounds like a simple problem

vista automatically puts downlads in teh downloads folder & you must have the close thsi window when downloads finish box checked

have you looked in teh downloads folder for teh files

to make sure where your folder is attempt to down, load something, as soon as it starts to download, look at the box & uncheck close this biox when finished

then when it has downlaoded it will have an open folder button

this explains how to find your download folder easily

I was not able to run the downloads on either site. i didn't know if the uninstallation of the norton is what really caused the problem. the major problem is the issue with the downloading. i thought the problem may be better answered under another topic.

I tried to download the norton removal tool. If I try to run it, the dialogue box disappears and nothing happens even if the close dialogue box is unchecked. If I attempt to save it, after the download is complete, an internet security popup box appears stating that AVG is trying to run and asks if I will allow it or not allow. No matter which one I click, the box just disappears and nothing happens. There is nothing but one single picture in my download folder.

You can try downloading the AV removal tools on another computer and copying them over with a USB memory stick.

I appreciate all of the assistance, but none of the solutions offered that require some type of download obviously have not worked because I am not able to download anything. I will have to try to find another computer I can use to download and copy the files onto my computer. Thank you for the solutions offered. Please continue to offer anything you can think of.

Then, you'll have to use a USB flash drive as suggested by lunarlander.

Thank you. I will have to try that. Would a virus cause this problem or is it most likely caused by the uninstallation of the AV software?

If it's not virus related you should be able to use System Restore to go back before you started trying all these solutions, then you probably can use the removal tools successfully.
