Exclamation FYI: Is new AVG 9 free version itself infected?
I downloaded avg_free_stb_en_9_40_free.exe. I thought I'd scan it at www.virustotal.com to make sure that AVG's website wasn't hacked and the download was good and it got the following hit:

McAfee-GW-Edition 6.8.5 2009.11.08 Heuristic.BehavesLike.Exploit.CodeExec.EOLM

I assume that McAfee-GW-Edition 6.8.5 made a mistake since it was the only hit but I thought people should be aware of this anyway.

But any comments on this would be appreciated.

If you obtained your Free AVG from this site: http://free.avg.com/ww-en/homepage
then it should be ok and you can disregard Mcafee's findiing as a false positive.

And did the www.virustotal.com site then attempt to sell you a program after its scan detected an "infection" in the saved AVG file?

You should've had a full-time antivirus program already installed to scan that file.

Don't rely on on-line scanners to protect your computer.

Apparently what I had was a stub program that downloads and intalls the full AVG 9.0 virus scanner. Virustotal.com is one of two metascanners that I learned about from another post here at techguys. AVG is one of the two scanners used by the site and based on what the AV-Comparitives.com site (mentioned by yet another post here at techguys) says about the various scanner one would think that the general premise of these metascanner sites is a very good one.

FYI: I posted a slightly longer version of my original post on AVG's forum and got a URL from which I downloaded the full version of AVG 9.0 which I've installed and seems to be working flawlessly so far. (about 24 hours so far).

I wasn't aware that AVG has an on-line scanner.

If you've downloaded and installed the full version of AVG 9.0, that's good.
