Solved: Computer speed
I was wondering if spyware or malware are the only reasons for a PC to be slow. Could it be overheating or something else? Mine has been slow for a while and it wasn't like that before, not just internet, but generaly slow, not at all times for instance some flash aplications run slow, or when changing the active window, it take some time to load the new window. The internet explorer was running terribly slow and there was a lot of memory allocated to it, I switched to Google Chrome, and its been much better, but the problem persists.
My system spec are the following:
Intel Celeron M 1.4GHz, 1Gb RAM It runs windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP3
I know its not a really fast machine, but it has been much faster than it is now. I adressed the heat thing because I believe it feels way too hot sometimes.

Right now it is slow evethough I'm just runnning this chrome window, downloading videos, and have the task administrator active. According to it the CPU is oscillating between 1% and 25% and the memory is 784M. The program that consumes the most memory is avgnsx.exe and avgchsvx.exe, the program that consumes most memory is System and MsMpEng. Ok hope you know something that might help me. Thanks in advance.

Are you running AVG anti-virus? I know that when I added AVG to one of my laptops it slowed it way down. I switched it to Avast! and the slowdown problem went away. I ask because both programs that you mention start with AVG.

Of course malware and spyware are reasons to contribute to a pc slowing down, however it's not all about infections. Old age for example is another, OS even.

Malwarebytes and SUPER Anti-spyware are good programs to check for spyware and malware.

sanchezinc:

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open windows, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

Thanx for the quick response to all of you, yeah I have avg free, it just updated to version 9, but the computer was slow since it had version 8 on, but still maybe 8 was the problem. I have run the HJT scan and here is the resulting log file.

The main reason why your computer is slow is because it has too many programs running in the background.

Your HijackThis log is difficult to read because much of it isn't in English.

Oh yeah, sorry I live in Mexico. Any idea what processes can I stop? or what else can I do to help?

You have too many Startup applications loading with Windows and too many processes running in the background. This can significantly increase your Startup time and affect overall performance.

You should definitely trim down your Startup list. Other than your security software, very few applications need to load with Windows at startup.

Click on Start > Run > and type msconfig.

Under the Startup tab, uncheck all unnecessary applications. Use these three websites to help you decide which items to uncheck:

Simply copy and paste the .exe files you see at the end of your HijackThis log's 04 (Startup) entries one by one.

1-
System Lookup (my favorite - for this one, you can paste the whole 04 entry)

2-
PC Review - Startup Files Database

3-
Startup Applications List

Remember, a lot of applications can be started manually when needed.

A list of names and files will appear. At the end of each entry, you'll notice a symbol:

Y = Normally leave to run at start-up

N = Not required - often infrequently used tasks that can be started manually, if necessary

U = User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary

X = Malware, spyware, adware, or other potentially unwanted items

? = Currently unknown status

Make sure to choose the correct information in the list, relating to the actual programs installed on your computer. Do not be alarmed by red "Xs" pointing to malware, especially if I haven't seen any in your HijackThis log. I do check before recommending this trimming.

Example:

Copy the following entry from your HijackThis log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

Paste it in this website: 1-
System Lookup

Now
here is what you get. On line #7, you'll see the Name (QuickTime Task), the Filename (Qttask.exe), the Description and at the end of the line, you'll see a N, meaning Not required - often infrequently used tasks that can be started manually, if necessary. So, you can without a doubt uncheck it from your Startup list.

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Thanx for the help, I have removed several entries from the startup list, I'll see the computer runs and let you know.
It has been much better, thanx for the help.
