Solved: Security Tools Virus: how do we recover?
My sister (who is overseas) just got whammed with the Security Tools Virus and didn't know about it and was played like a cheap drunk sorority girl at a frat party.

We just tried installing malwarebytes to remove it and work from there (I sent the file to her via skype since apparently skype's scripting is badass). It did install but unfortunately will not run.

She did get whammed pretty good and a bunch of legit files probably got deleted...i'm afraid we're stuck doing a full reformat/recover at this point...

If anyone has any other recommendations I'd appreciate it. And please keep in mind that I'm across the atlantic from her computer, we're communicating on a shaky skype connection, and I'm the most computer literate of the two of us, not her who has to actually do everything. I can not easily retrieve system or error log details and I can't throw files willynilly about the internet. I appreciate all the help I can get, just please don't be surprised when I can only do so much

Thank you

Use Microsoft Software Removal tool and MS security essential software + Avast Home Edition

computer fixed
She tried Avast and, like the other programs, it would install and not open.

She ended up doing the on-board reformat that Acer has on their systems. Which I told her was there and she promptly did not hear through the panic filter. magh.

windryder, tell your sister not to use two antivirus programs at the same time. they can conflict with each other and cause considerable slowdown in the computer. Microsoft security essentials and avast are both antivirus programs

She wasn't using ANY antivirus programs because they would not open.

Yes we tried in safe mode.

And like i said above, she ended up just reformatting the system, which fixed the problem. Hence the "Solved" Status.
