Dc79.exe --- what is this?
Hello...

I am running a "geezer" system, Sony Vaio 2002 with XP Professional SP2.
Have been unable to use "System Restore" for some time and cannot install SP3 either. Decided to get current with MS updates and found MS Baseline Security Analyzer. With it's help I "fixed" a number of issues but then...

MS Baseline Security Analyzer is warning me about "more than two" administrator accounts. While I recognize 2 of them the third is listed as "S-1-5-21-809299238-162025716-2501954535-1003" however going to Management Tools etc. this "administrator" does not show, i.e. I can't control it by removing it.

An AVG scan revealed the following warning:

"C:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-809299238-162025716-2501954535-1005\Dc79.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""

This is one of several AVG warnings about broken digital signatures, including the item below, which is actually XP's SP3 installation file which would not complete installation due to an "access denied" message late in the process. (My first attempt to install SP3 failed in May 09, since that time I seem to have been unable to complete any System Restore.)

"C:\WindowsXP-KB936929-SP3-x86-ENU.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""

Questions:
What does that "Dc79.exe" do?
What significance has a ...broken digital signature... issued by Microsoft? Does that prevent the installation of SP3?

FYI - the remaining seven warnings involve HP scanner & picture related programs, not before flagged by AVG:
"C:\col3927\hpsw\instmsiw.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""
"C:\col3927\hpsw\instmsia.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""
"C:\col3927 (HP Scanner Update Jul 08)\hpsw\instmsiw.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""
"C:\col3927 (HP Scanner Update Jul 08)\hpsw\instmsia.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""
"D:\HP Scanner\col3927.exe:\hpsw\instmsiw.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""
"D:\\HP Scanner\col3927.exe:\hpsw\instmsia.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""
"D:\HP Scanner\col3927.exe";"The file is signed with a broken digital signature, issued by: Microsoft Corporation.";""

Can anyone help with this? Thank you.

What is your AVG version? AVG recently fixed something related to 'broken signatures'. The latest version is AVG Free 9.0.707.
