Solved: CCleaner, SearchIndexer, Malware/Spyware cleaners
I've read some post here (but can't find them now) about deleting SearchIndexer.exe. I searched my computer for this file and found 3 of them. One searchindexer.exe and two searchindexer.exe.mui, all in my Systems32 folder. Shall I delete all three of them?

I also read somewhere where I should install CCleaner. Is that a free download? Is that compatible with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperAntiSpyware? Do I need all 3?

Also, I downloaded Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SuperSpyware last night (per suggestions that I found on this forum) but now those two pgms are appearing in my Startup menu (msconfig). Should I leave them there or remove them from that list?

I just removed my AV pgm (Secure Resolutions) and installed AVG but since then, everything seems to be going wrong. My computer is super slow now and AOL takes forever to load. I sure hope I did the right thing.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

What is your operating system? XP, Vista... ?

For SearchIndexer.exe,

On XP, go to your Add or Remove programs and uninstall Windows Desktop Search 4.0.

On Vista, click on Start > Search > type services.msc

Scroll down to Windows Search.

Double-click on it and stop the service. You may also disable it.

And yes, CCleaner is free. It won't conflict with MBAM and SAS.

As for the Startup entries, you can uncheck them in msconfig or disable them from Startup in MBAM's and SAS's options.

Please click here to download and install the HijackThis installer.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

easy way to tell if you are infected or not is to go to kaspersky.com and use their free scanner. You will have download an active-x component for it to run, and it will take a while, but you will then know if you are infected. If you ARE infected, you can then come back here, let us know, and we'll steer you in the right direction.

Using Internet Explorer, visit kaspersky online scanner.

Answer Yes, when prompted to install an ActiveX component.
The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files.
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
Locate the Scan Settings button & configure to:
Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
Extended
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases
Click OK & have it scan My Computer
Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply
Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan

Thanks,

v

You have too many Startup applications loading with Windows and too many processes running in the background. This can significantly increase your Startup time and affect overall performance.

You should definitely trim down your Startup list. Other than your security software, very few applications need to load with Windows at startup.

Click on Start > Run > and type msconfig.

Under the Startup tab, uncheck all unnecessary applications. Use these three websites to help you decide which items to uncheck:

Simply copy and paste the .exe files you see at the end of your HijackThis log's 04 (Startup) entries one by one.

1-
System Lookup (my favorite - for this one, you can paste the whole 04 entry)

2-
PC Review - Startup Files Database

3-
Startup Applications List

Remember, a lot of applications can be started manually when needed.

A list of names and files will appear. At the end of each entry, you'll notice a symbol:

Y = Normally leave to run at start-up

N = Not required - often infrequently used tasks that can be started manually, if necessary

U = User's choice - depends whether a user deems it necessary

X = Malware, spyware, adware, or other potentially unwanted items

? = Currently unknown status

Make sure to choose the correct information in the list, relating to the actual programs installed on your computer. Do not be alarmed by red "Xs" pointing to malware, especially if I haven't seen any in your HijackThis log. I do check before recommending this trimming.

Example:

Copy the following entry from your HijackThis log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime

Paste it in this website: 1-
System Lookup

Now
here is what you get. On line #7, you'll see the Name (QuickTime Task), the Filename (Qttask.exe), the Description and at the end of the line, you'll see a N, meaning Not required - often infrequently used tasks that can be started manually, if necessary. So, you can without a doubt uncheck it from your Startup list.

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

Phantom - Thank you very much for your help. I followed your instructions above for speeding up my computer, I deleted 8 items from my Startup menu and now my computer seems to be booting up much faster - and running smoother.

I do, however, still have an issue with Search Indexer. In my list of programs I found Windows Search 4.0 (not Windows Desktop Search 4.0) and tried to uninstall that but a dialog box popped up and stated that many programs would not work if I continue the install so I canceled it.

Run HijackThis again.

Click on Open The Misc Tools section.

Click on Open Uninstall Manager...

Click on Save list...

Save the text file to the desktop.

Copy and paste the log (from Notepad) in your next post.

I do, however, still have an issue with Search Indexer. In my list of programs I found Windows Search 4.0 (not Windows Desktop Search 4.0) and tried to uninstall that but a dialog box popped up and stated that many programs would not work if I continue the install so I canceled it.
It's the same thing and should not cause any problems after uninstalling.

If you don't want to uninstall it, you can disable it by doing the following:

Click on Start > Run > type services.msc

Scroll down and locate Indexing Service, and then double-click on it.

Click on the Stop button to immediately stop the Indexing Service if the service status shows "Running".

Under the "Startup Type", select Disabled to permanently disable the indexing service so that it won’t run again.

Like I wrote, you can leave it and simply disable it.

Thank you again. I think I feel safer disabling it. I was unable to Print Screen/Paste the dialog box here but it said: "The following pgms were insalled after Windows Search 4.0. If these pgm depend on Win Search 4.0 they might not work properly after it is removed" and the list contains a ton of pgms, including all the Windows Security Updates, AntiSpyware, etc.

I will disable it. Thank you again for your help.
