In the last few versions of Java, uninstalling the previous versions is no longer necessary. Whenever I download a new one, the previous one doesn't show anymore. In the old days, you would get stuck with 12 other 100 MB versions in your Add or Remove programs!

I believe since version 1.6.0.10 was released, a newly-released 1.6 version will now overwrite and replace an older 1.6 version.

It's computers that still have versions 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 installed that need to uninstall them and then delete their leftover folders in C:\Program Files\Java.

Or look for the following Java folders and if found delete them.

C:\Program Files\Java
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Java
C:\Windows\Sun
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Java
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sun\Java
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Java
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Sun\Java

This is done BEFORE you download the current version of Sun Java

Thanks Phantom and flavallee. I wasn't aware of that change in the newer versions.

And for those who are planning to use Mozilla Firefox 3.6 or newer, Java 6 Update 10(1.6.0.17) or newer is going to be required for Java-based applications to work.

Kenny:

Thanks for posting that file path list.

That list is for XP only, correct?
