Be sure Java is latest version
http://www.viruslist.com/en/advisories/37231

My machine was lagging a little..I was seeing high cpu usage on occasions by DCOMLAUNCH service and PLUG and PLAY service...50 percent on both cores

I would have yahoo messenger do the same...this would last a few minutes at a time.

Applications stumbling upon opening such as yahoo and firefox showing in the title bar...."not responding" briefly

Applications hanging out for a second after closeing....as well as wmp and mail not opening very fast as usual upon opening right after closing as they were being flush from memory.

Scans coundnt find any malware ..but the vulnderabilty scan in kaspersky said I had outdated java...I went to up date it said I had latest version..I knew something was up then........I unistalled the existing java..it would be there after a reboot after manually deleting some java files I was able to have the java fail to run...I then verified it had not reinstalled...went to get the latest version all was well....But wrecked kaspersky..stating databases are out of date....then stated black listed keys were outdated...Did a repair and all was well.

I was having the same problems a couple weeks agao and just used my image I created after a fresh install and setting up my apps etc..I hadnt installed any more software so I knew that wasnt the problem...tried system restore..no luck..uninstalled the latest windows updates for the last week..no luck.

Update your java ASAP this patch is needed bad to prevent from getting hit by visiting various sites

Just updated, thanks. 6.16 to 6.17

Weird, i used the jucheck.exe to check, it said I had the latest version, so I went to the java website and did the verify, it said I did not have the latest version, so I updated it from there.

I have the same problem Brett described.
Unfortunately I am too stupid to figure out, how to update Java. There are too many links and versions and sites, so I can't find the correct site and version.
Java used to ask me, if I want to update, but this doesn't happen any more.

thanks in advance for the correct link

Go to this link and click "Verify Now" in the Windows section, it will guide you through the rest to get the latest version installed.

The one you want to download is:

Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)
JRE 6 Update 17

It's the fifth one down at this link:

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

Here are my instructions that I post for updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17 .
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 17 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE or Java(TM) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

As Cookiegal mention be sure to remove older versions of Java off your computer. Older versions are one source of computer infections.

thanks everyone.
First I checked my version, I got an OOPS!!
Then I had a dial-up error for hours, so now I am downloading (probably the whole night) the new Java
then I will delete (uninstall?) old version)
then install the new - hopefully full version (might get dial-up hickups, it's a big file)
then I will hope to have errors disappear

You won't have connection problems when installing it as you're doing an offline installation. You just have to download the executable to your desktop. After that, no connection is needed for installation.

after 3hours 10 min. downloading done. I followed Cookiegal's instructions, now I have the new version. thanks.

Yeap, there is still dial-up, I blame Bell and the cable companies, not doing anything about it. I only live on the outskirts of a city with half a million people, not in the boonies, but we are treated that way. Oh Canada!

thanks everyone!

My java install is at 98 mb in size ..is this the normal size install or did my uninstall of the prior version not work correctly?...is it just huge because it is patch on top of patch on top of more patch...Like adobe reader

That sounds right for the size. That's what mine is. Even if you don't uninstall older versions, it doesn't install over the top.
