lack of space in hard drive
Local disc space is 6.99 GB in total (my old Gateway PC cannot take any increased capacity). Continually getting a message saying no space left on disk.I'm running Windows XP Professional.Have transferred everything out of My Documents folder, defragged, run CCleaner, Advanced System Care and Malwarebytes, emptied the Recycle Bin,Temp.Internet folders and run safety checks regularly.
Window Security Centre warns my virus protection is non-existant and I cannot instal AVG anti-virus because my disk space is too low to cope with the updates.
Currently installed programs amount to 1405.6 MB as shown on Add/Remove Programs, which shows large numbers of security updates for Windows .NET Framework, Office 2003,Publisher,Access, Outlook and I.E 7. Can any of these be removed and will that make any room on the hard drive?
Or is it a virus, rootkit or bug ?

I would not remove MS updates from Add/Remove since doing so will remove the updates and may have unpredictable results.

There are a few other things you can do to free up space:
You can delete all the C:\Windows\$NtUnistallKBxxxxxx folders which are uninstall folders for hotfixes and security updates.
Disable hibernation if it is enabled, then delete the C:\hiberfil.sys file.
(Be sure to empty the Recycle Bin after the above)
Remove all System Restore points except the last one.
Open a command window and type DEL C:\*.TMP /S /Q (this may take several minutes to delete temp files).

What is the model name and model number of your Gateway computer, and is it a desktop or a laptop?

Gateway EV700 listed in your computer specs is a 17" CRT monitor.

Considering your computer has a puny 7 GB hard drive and is running Windows XP, you're not making things any easier by installing space-hungry programs - such as Microsoft Office 2003.

Many thanks for your advice. Have now solved the problem, thanks to you. Altho' had run deletes on history and temporary internet files via Advanced System Care and Malwarebytes applications, by following your suggestions have made enough space and AVG system is now running perfectly. - and I have some space left over !
