AVG 9.0 causing email/internet lock up
Hi,
I have searched some re. AVG but am not security savvy, so any help appreciated!
Purchased AVG 9.0 and I think it's giving all sorts of lockup and hanggggiiing problems (email, internet, everything!). And it seems to take forever to 'resolve' anything...it directs me when 'threat' appears to 'look at file' but takes me instead to a knowledge base screen not to actual file...and there's never a way to know if it's really resolved, since there's no "done" or " removed" box - I find it very time-consuming and the navigation very cumbersome...I don't want to spend 20 min. every time I turn on computer!

Any alternatives! I spent $40 or so on this, but I can't take much more!

Did you purchase the AVG stand-alone antivirus program or the AVG antivirus and firewall program or the AVG security suite?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Try to remember to post what verson of Windows you're using and what browser you're using and what E-mail program you're using when you're posting a problem that concerns browsing and/or E-mail. That makes it easier and quicker to help you resolve the problem.

Go here and click the green icon to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

Close all open windows first, then install it in its default location.

Start it, then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan finishes in less than 30 seconds, the log file will appear.

Save that log file, then return here and copy-and-paste the entire contents of it here.

hi flavalee,
I went to site and downloaded hijackthis, etc.,installed, and did scan - it produced threats and infections, but nowhere allowed me to actually REMOVE anything without purchase...or to produce the log you spoke of (when I clicked on 'scan')...so I went to get free edition, but again, said it would detect but I have to register/purchase to get removal...it appears...maybe I missed something, but I think not...if I do purchase this software - which product is best? I use Verizon mobile broadband air card for internet - so do I need hightest level product or just anti-virus.and if I do so, I then should uninstall AVG, correct? At least with this product, it states level of threat and seems to navigate better - I DO NOT WANT to spend 30 min every morning trying to figure out my anti-virus software! Thanks...

You didn't click the green icon like I advised you to do. You probably clicked the link on the left and downloaded and installed PC Tools Spyware Doctor. Get rid of it and then follow my previous instructions.

Flavalle,
No, I did not click the one on the left; I followed your directions and clicked the Green one on the right that said 'latest version;'

I've checked the link and it's working fine.

When you click the green icon and the next page appears and you click "Download Now", the file to save that appears is HiJackThis.msi and is 1.33 MB in size.

You're apparently doing something wrong. You're not clicking the Spyware Doctor download link on the page that appears, are you?

If you're still having a problem, go here and click the installer link for version 2.0.4 to download and save it.

Well, I've done something wrong - since when I went to 'properties' for HiJackthis on my desktop - it is not the file name/size you named. I'll have to do it all over again a little later on. How can I make this error...this is why I hate doing this stuff! thanks.

If you're going to use a computer, you really need to know how to download and save and install programs, and also how to uninstall/remove them.

I realize that many people on here aren't computer-savvy or are newbies/novices, so I tend to give specific and simple directions for that reason.

Flavallee,
I truly appreciate your help - and I am not really tech savvy because I don't have the patience and mind-set to do what you do well. That said, I am very experienced and understand downloading, saving and installing .exe programs thank you very much...I'm a smart and detail-oriented person who followed your directions and STILL didn't do something right. I'm fallible, as indeed are you,

I think what happened is after you clicked the green icon and the new webpage appeared, you clicked the Spyware Doctor download link in the new webpage instead of clicking the right side of the drop-down bar and then clicking "Download Now".

Whatever mistake you made, I decided to link you to the Trend Micro site instead and have you download it from there.

I'll be waiting to see the HijackThis log when you get around to submitting it. There's no big hurry.
