I use mcafee as a security program for my personal laptop. Unfortunately this software has slowed down my computer more than I would like.

Is there any way to adjust the security coverage to increase system performance?

A full security suite will slow down a computer more than just a stand-alone antivirus program will because it has more features and running processes.

Everyone this year is suddenly concerned that their security program is possibly slowing them down. Even though we now have dual and quad core cpus. I guess I'm lucky that I chose ESET Antivirus, which is reputedly 'slim'. My cpu is circa 2004, so that's solo core.

It would be nice if everyone would submit their computer specs when they submit a problem, but it doesn't happen. Let's see if we're dealing with a dinosaur or a newer one in this thread. I'm on a 2002-era Gateway desktop right now. It has an Intel Pentium IV 2.0 GHz processor and is maxed out with 2048 MB of RAM.

You have 2 major performance bottlenecks right there that's going to make that laptop run like a snail:

It has only 512 MB of RAM.
(Note: It's showing 480 MB because the other 32 MB is dedicated to the on-board graphics)

It has too many programs that are auto-loading and running in the background.

If perchance it's a Dell brand, advise what the "service tag number" on the sticker is.

Go here and click the installer link in version 2.0.4 to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4.

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it. Allow it to install in its default location.

After it's been installed, start it and then click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in less than 30 seconds, a log file will appear. Save that log file.

According to the MEMORYTEN site and the CRUCIAL site, that laptop supports up to 2048 MB(2 GB) of RAM.

It uses 200-pin DDR PC2700 SODIMM modules. Here is a closeup image of what that module looks like.

Since you laptop currently has 512 MB of RAM, it has a single 512 MB module in one slot or it has a 256 MB module in both slots.

My recommendation would be to buy a matching set of 512 MB or 1024 MB(1 GB) modules and increase the RAM in that laptop to 1024 MB(1 GB) or 2048 MB(2 GB).

The prices at both sites are about the same. I've used both sites for about 3 years, so I can attest to their reliability.

Your java program appears to be very outdated, and it's unknown what other outdated/unneeded/useless programs are in that computer, so do the following:

Start HijackThis, but don't run a scan.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Adobe Reader 6.0.1 is extremely outdated, so uninstall it.

You should have a program for opening and viewing on-line PDF documents, so download and install Foxit Reader 4.0.0.0619. It's a better and faster replacement for Adobe Reader.

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05 is extremely outdated, so uninstall it.

You need java in your computer so you can view all the multimedia content of webpages, so you need to download and install Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0.21(6 Update 21).
