Anti-virus vendors offer free LNK protection - Update
Anti-virus vendors offer free LNK protection - Update.

As malware exploiting the unpatched vulnerability in the code for processing short-cuts (.lnk files) in all versions of Windows, is spreading fast, it's high time that users obtain protection. Two AV vendors, G Data and Sophos, have come forward to fill the gap left by the absence of a patch from Microsoft.

An 'out of band' patch for this is due out next Monday; http://blogs.technet.com/b/msrc/arch...y-2286198.aspx Hopefully, some guidance will be available as to whether this patch will automatically co-operate with the automated MS 'Fix It' for this exploit (for those that have used it).

Presumably we will have to 'wait and see' how the patch will play with the third party fixes offerred by Sophos and others, unless those firms issue statements of their own.

I had a director come to me with his personal laptop which he had just bought from PC World. The laptop had the latest version of Norton but nay, within a week of use it had caught this very virus! Was a nightmare to resolve. Thanks for this...

Just in case anybody is still following this thread, this story; http://www.h-online.com/security/new...s-1049507.html suggests that those who used the MS 'Fix It' will have to undo it if they wish to see shortcut icons again (which seems fairly logical to me).

I haven't seen anything about the third party 'fixes' (but I haven't been looking very hard because I didn't use them or the Fix It!).
