Solved: Unable to install security software
I've looked over the other posts but they don't seem to be quite the same. My basic system is a Compaq 1638NX, AMD Athlon 64 3400+, 2.19Ghz, 1GB RAM PC3200, one Samsung HDD, one Hitachi HDD with three partitions each. Running from the Samsung with about 32GB of free space. I'm running XP SP3 with IE8. All updates have been downloaded.

Background: I was having trouble with my HDD and found it necessary to restore my system from a dedicated Compaq restore partition. I restored to a fresh partition on a differnt drive. This solved the issues I was having previously but unfortunately I was set back to a fresh install of all software. The problem with that is that I lost all of the CDs to my software when I moved. Therefore I went back to 2005, literally. I was left with using Norton 2005. Even with the updates I was afraid it wasn't going to do the job. When I moved I got access to McAfee Security Suite from my cable provider. Yeah I know......McAfee, but it was FREE! I uninstalled Norton and proceeded to download McAfee. I got a message saying that I "didn't have enough room. The software requires 200MB of free space". I checked and that partition has around 30GB of free space. I even resized the partition slightly. I tried again, but no joy.

I decided to try some freeware. I tried Avast, AVG, and Avira. I was able to download and save to the desktop but unable to install. Each said that an error occurred. I reviewed the logs, not really knowing what I was looking for, but it seems that "access not allowed" to certain files was a common theme. None gave the same error as McAfee requiring more space.

I've had McAfee on-line support take a look but they've been unable, and quite frankly in some cases unwilling, to help. I've had three on-line chat sessions to their third party support group in India. They tried doing remote fixes. They all did exactly the same things looking for the usual suspects in the beginning and then got frustrated when they were unable to find an answer after quite a bit of trying. The person in the second session sent me to level two, but two of the three times (including level 2 support) they basically just gave up, made an excuse (OK things should be fine now, reboot under safe mode, and it will work.... oh, c'mon...... NOT) and just left it to someone else. I don't know, maybe they're timed.

I've gone onto a different forum and they've tried to help. No disrespect to them at all. I really appeciate their help, but it's not working. I'm just really worried. I'm running without security software (just Windows firewall), and I'm just looking for a differnt perspective.

Here's a very brief overview of what we've tried:

Before the forum I ran Norton uninstaller from the Norton site after I was unable to install any security software.

We ran Gmer looking for rootkit problems.

We ran Norton Uninstaller again.

We ran ComboFix.

We installed SubInACL, tried reset.cmd

All with no effect at all.

I can download anything, and the system seems to work fine using any function but security. I can't install any security software of any kind.

There............that's my story and I'm sticking to it. "Help me obe wan knobe........... you're my only hope"

Not sure if I can help but,

Please click here to download and install HijackThis.

Run it and select Do a system scan and save a logfile.

The log will be saved in Notepad. Copy and paste the log in your next post.

Do not fix anything

Are you the one who has edited your HOSTS file?

O1 - Hosts: 64.71.248.152 download.mcafee.com
O1 - Hosts: 64.208.176.57 download.mcafee.com

You might want to download and run LSP-Fix.

O10 - Broken Internet access because of LSP provider 'c:\program files\bonjour\mdnsnsp.dll' missing

Click Start > Run > type regedit

Go to: (you still have traces of Norton)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Brows er Helper Objects\{BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872}

Right-click and delete {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872}.

Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Bonjour Service

Right-click and delete Bonjour Service.

Go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iPod Service

Right-click and delete iPod Service.

Reboot the computer.

As previously noted, I had three on-line chat/repair sessions with the third party McAfee folks. I don't know what they were doing some of the time but it seems likely that they are responsible. I have no trouble at all with my internet access, but if you feel that it would be wise to do so I certainly will.

Wow, I don't know what to say. It's fixed. I'm not sure why, but I had realized yesterday that I had Glary utilities on the system and I'd forgotten about it. Of course it has a registry cleaner. I accidentally fixed two of the three problems with that and the reg-edit apparently was the last, but clearly the most necessary step. I can't thank you enough.

What reg-edit exactly?

I'm glad you got it fixed.
