I know that I need a good graphics card to run higher resolution screens. I would get a 15" inch screen either 900p or 1080p.
So, I was wondering if I would be able to play games with a NVIDIA GeForce 540M on a 900p screen normally?
Also, if not, could the NVIDIA GeForce 550M play on a 900p?
Also, the 450M on a 1080p? and a 550M on a 1080p?

Also, if i bought a 17" screen, would I need a better graphics card to make up for the same difference of 900p and 1080p?

Are you referring to laptops? If so, and you want an HD display, then that's what you need to purchase. It'll be noted as such in the specs. The graphics chipset is only part of the equation. Only high-end laptops have HD displays. I've never heard of 900p.

oops i forgot to mention that i was talkin about laptops.
but according to them, there was a 720p 900p and 1080p
the 15inch only offered 720p and 1080p
and the 17inch only offered 900p and 1080p

In the laptop, if using the internal LCD, then the limiting factor for the maximum resolution is the panel. The screen size doesn't matter, only resolution. Pretty much any modern dedicated nVidia or AMD GPU can run certain games at 1440x900 at medium quality, but 1920x1080 gets much harder at almost any quality.

But there's no one fit all answer; a game like Crysis 2 is way more demanding then the Sims 3 and will require a significantly more powerful GPU. You need to check what GPU's are recommended for the particular games you are interested in and aim for higher than the recommended requirements(you can ignore the minimum requires altogether) as laptop GPU's tend to be less powerful than their desktop counterparts.

I've never seen 900p as an HD resolution. 1440x900 is a standard definition resolution. 1080p is an HD resolution.

What exactly are you looking for?
