Solved: HP Computer (Vista) Slow
I have been trying to figure out how to make my HP computer run faster. It is amazingly slow even though I have added extra memory.

I am attaching a screenshot of the make up of the computer.

There are several reasons why a computer will run slow, so it may take a bit of troubleshooting to determine what your reasons are.

Do the following in the order listed.

----------------------------------------------------------

Go To Control Panel - User Accounts.

Turn off or disable the User Account Control(UAC) feature, then click Apply/OK.

Restart the computer.

----------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

----------------------------------------------------------

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

I don't see a screenshot in post #3.

Did you disable UAC like I advised you to before using HiJackThis?

It appears to be infested with toolbars and malware/spyware.

It appears that multiple antivirus programs are installed.

It appears that some installing, updating, and replacing needs to be done.

I'll be waiting to see the second log that I requested.

Is AVG 2012 and Norton Internet Security both currently installed in that computer?

HiJackThis doesn't display accurately and completely with the 64-bit version of Windows, so I'll need to ask you some questions that I normally wouldn't if you were using the 32-bit version.

Go to Control Panel - Programs And Features, then uninstall

ALOT Toolbar

Apple Software Update

Dogpile Toolbar

Google Update Helper

Java(TM) 6 Update 7

PriceGong Toolbar

Spybot - Search & Destroy

Yahoo! Software Update

Yahoo! Toolbar

---------------------------------------------------

Download and save the free version of

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.1.0.1002

then close all open windows first, then install it.

Make sure to update its definition files during the install process.

Make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars and homepages, it may offer.

After it's been installed and updated, restart the computer.

DON'T run a scan with it yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.61.0.1400(which you already have installed), then update its definition files.

DON'T run a scan with it yet.

---------------------------------------------------

Advise when all of the above has been done.

Download and save Norton Removal Tool

Close all open windows first, then run the tool.

Allow it to remove everything that's associated with Symantec, Norton, and LiveUpdate.

Restart the computer to complete the removal process, if prompted to.

Before you run a quick scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware, make sure to update their definition files first.

After the quick scan is finished, make sure to select and remove everything they find.
