I am about to donate my Sony Handy Cam DCR-TRV260 (Hi 8 Film). However, I have to convert the last of some tapes to digital video files to store on HD.

I hooked up the camera and then had compatibility issues on the initial install and it was aborted by windows. Then I went to Sony's website and tried downloading the newest compatible software-drivers for it, but I need a CD Key or some sort. My camcorder doesn't have such a CD; that is how old it is. Spoke to the reps via chat and they said I have to export the video from the camera via A/V cable, except I have no such capability.

I need software and probably a few hardware mods to extract the video from these tapes one last time.

I've found some gear, but haven't found anything that can do exactly what I need.

Can anybody assist?

How many tapes are you looking at?

You can buy a TV capture card, and do it that way. But if its only a couple tapes, its probably more economical to bring them to your local Walgreens / Walmart or photoshop and have them turn them to DVD for you. I believe current rate is < $10 each.

There are also online companys to do it for you, ship them the tape and they send back the DVD and tape.

That is one of the routes you can go, yes. You just have to decide if its cheaper / better for you long term to have the full setup or not.
