Solved: Computer Suddenly Shut Itself Off
Every so often (10% to 15% of the time), when I start my system, the keyboard won't
start. I have to shut it down and restart. I jiggle the keyboard plug a little where it plugs
into the computer, but don't know if that helps or not. Anyway, then I restart and it's OK.

The other day it did that, and I didn't know the keyboard hadn't started until I tried to type
something. So, I went to Start>Shut Down, and told it to shut down (didn't click on
"Restart"....just said to shut down). When I clicked OK, it suddenly shut completely off,
instantly, without shutting down Windows or anything.....it just suddenly turned off.

When I pushed the start button to turn it back on, the fans started up, then it instantly shut
down again (before anything could start loading). Tried a 2nd time, and it did the same
thing.

Then, I turned off the power strip for the whole system. Let it sit about a full minute,
turned power back on, and it started normally (didn't run Scandisk....just started).
Immediately I ran Spybot, AdAware and AVG full system scans. AdAware picked up
seven tracking cookies ("Data Miner"), but it usually does find a few of those. Nothing
unusual about that. The other scans found nothing. I ran HijackThis, and the log is as
clean as one can get (I'm posting it just for your own info).

Besides the system info I have in my signature, my M/B is Shuttle AI61, CPU is AMD Athlon-PECM 700 MHz, MB Chipset is AMD 750 Irongate, and BIOS is Award Modular (01/04/02).

Anyone know what could have caused this, or if it's anything to worry about (maybe will never happen again....I don't know....would just like to know what to look for if it does). Thanks much......

Here is my HJT log:

Bump!!

(hope I'm not in too much trouble for bumping my own post, but I really hope someone who sees this will have some idea what I can look for if it happens again). If I'm not supposed to bump my own post, let me know....I won't do it again. Thanks for your patience, btw

Could be the keyboard connector slowly going bye bye. Any way to use a USB keyboard instead?

Actually, my keyboard has the USB connector....I've just never used it. I thought I still had to have the other jack connected. Can I use just the USB and not connect the other regular jack?? If so, I might try that (I have the disk for this keyboard but, like the USB connector, have never used it, since I only need the basic keyboard function). Thanks again for any thoughts.

If it's a USB keyboard, sure, it'll work in the USB slot, as long as the USB slots are working Sometimes, I have found, those connectors to the normal port are the ones that are spotty.

Hmmmmm.....Don't know why my other reply didn't post.....hopefully it won't show up so I don't give the same answer

Anyway, I never thought about using JUST the USB connector (I always thought it was just an "extra" that I didn't need). Anyway, thanks for the thoughts. I'll try just the USB and see what happens (I do have the disk....just never used it). Will let you know how it works. Anyhow, won't be answering again until later tomorrow (it's night here, and time for bed, then work tomorrow). However, I will answer when I do this and let you know how it worked.

Those usb to ps2 connectors are junk.. I would just plug in via the usb connector. Hopefully that solves it..

I had the same problem with my Dell laptop. It used to randomly switch off. I refitted the extra memory module and it has been OK since then.

This is an old post (from Nov 4, 2004), but thought I should post the final answer (I just now found the problem, and this is the middle of Jan, 2005). Anyway, I don't know if this will come up with anyone else, but one more little bit of info for you

First, to clarify something, my computer didn't randomly shut off. The problem was that, when I first turned it on, it would begin to start then immediately shut back off (a matter of seconds....before anything could load). I never did find the problem until just now.

In case this should happen to anyone else, the problem was (is) that the "On" button sometimes sticks when I push it to turn the system on. There is so little difference between the "on" and "off" positions that I didn't notice it. What happened is that, when it did this, the button didn't come completely back out when I pushed it to turn the system on. This means that it was acting the same as if you pushed the button in and held it on purpose to do a "hard shutdown." Only thing is that I didn't notice the button was still in when I started the system.

I suppose there's some repetition here, but I appreciated your help and wanted to let you know what had happened. Who knows? Someone else may have this problem again someday, and it might help to know to look for this.

Anyhow, even though it's an old post, I thought I'd post the answer to the problem.

Best to all.....log_splitter
